15:21....2:27 for me
15:21....2:27 for me
I ran 14:24 for a 5k. Ran a couple of 222 marathons with on years of 90-100 mile weeks. I was probably more efficient in shorter distances. Both 222s ran in less than ideal weather and ran solo for the last 6+ miles in both. Run a flat marathon that will have lots of competition. Much harder to run fast marathon without company. Also hope for weather in the 40s or 50s. Makes a big difference.
Like many others have said... can? Yes! will? who knows. Maybe not your first marathon. After running one and/or a few halfs at pace and getting the experience of racing for over 2 hours, you should be able to cruise through 2:24. My marathon (2:26) and half marathon (1:09) times are much faster than predicted from 5k (15:45) times. I just don't have the leg speed for the short stuff.
Yes a middle distance type runner will not run even close equivalent marathon, but a long distance type runner with a 14:30 should be able to manage 2:20 or so.

No. Marathons are long bro.
I know a guy who's PR is between 14:50-59 on a track and his PR is 2:21 and 1:06 for the half He runs 120 miles a week. Granted his focus is on the marathon it proves it can be done. My pr is 14:31 and I have nowhere near the endurance my buddy has and I ran a 20 Miler in 1:49 which is 2:23 pace. I had never done a run over 16 miles in my life up till that day.
I ran 2.14 with a 14.44 PR. I’m not saying for a second there is much of a link between the two or even that you can predict a marathon time from a 5k but with the right amount of aerobic work you certainly are ‘fast’ enough.

I am making a bet with large stakes with some friends that I could maintain 5:30 pace for a full marathon. I can run close to 14:30 for a 5K and the longest run I have ever done is 17 miles close to 6:00 flat, which was quite relaxed. Do I have a shot at making bank or have I thrown away money?
You don’t even need to be sub 15 to run 2:24.
2:24 isn’t that difficult. You just need to train for it. When I’m coming at marathons from a speed perspective, I like to do lots of 10 milers faster than marathon pace even before my marathon cycle begins. Bc running 10 miles at 5:15 pace or whatever isn’t that taxing.
Just compare to what elite women are running. YMMV but many of them with 14:40s 5K have ran faster than 2:24.
