Why is everyone so concerned about Fisher? I get that he is good, but there are more people than just him. It doesn't take much of a breakthrough race to get another person better than Fisher.
Are you kidding me? There are more than 3 billion men in the world and only 6 of them have run the 10k faster than Fisher. So I'd say that you're wrong.
People are underestimating Chep. He excels at holding the steady pace right-on time and pushes that final 400-500m to his max. You don't make WR attempts like this public so early before a competition unless you're pretty damn confident. The only thing I really see derailing him is bad weather/bad winds. No matter what the race will be fast.
US 10k championship will be Friday night. People could double back on Saturday for the 5k if they wanted to.
Even if the 10k and the 5k were on 2 consecutive days instead of on the same day, why in the world would a professional runner run both? That makes no sense. Their 2nd race would suck.
Better to fully recover from the 10k and then race a 5k a few weeks later.
Early predictions? Will he break his own world record? Maybe Jakob will make a surprise last minute entry. A little sad Fisher won't be in the race (10k trials are at PRE).
I think he will be in great form, but I don't think he will get it.
Does anyone actually think Fisher is only 11 seconds behind Gebresalassie in the 10,000m all-time without the shoes/pacing lights?!
Like I wrote after the Fisher 26:33 10,000m, Cheptegei will probably run 26:0x and everything will be relative again between East Africans and non-east Africans. Maybe he'll even break 26-minutes, who knows?
Fisher won't be seen as a world-beater by Letsrun any longer.
10ks are so hard to set up and get right, especially now that they are off the diamond league. Id guess Chep, Barega, Kiplimo, Aregawi and Kejelcha could run faster if they had similar support pacing wise past 8k. Which would put Fisher somewhere around the 6th best 10k guy in the world, could probably snag a medal if things break his way at Worlds.
Geb probably challenges 26:10 once you factor in wavelight/pacing to 8k/shoes. But at the end of the day you can only speculate so much, Fisher went out and actually did it, so kudos to him.

For sure, kudos to him. It's awesome.
I guess we can only gather info about the benefits of the shoes and speculate because some of the greats never had access to the technology. Kipchoge is the GOAT marathoner using the new shoes and Bekele has run 2 seconds slower (like 1/5,000th's percent off). Bekele beat Kipchoge on the track all of the time.
WR's - Bekele ran 12:37 and 26:17 pretty much all alone without pacing lights and super shoes. He beat all of the greats of his day using the technology. In his 10,000m his brother paced him to 5k in like 13:09/10, then he broke Sammy Wanjiru pretty quickly (wanjiru ran 26:41), and ran the last 4k alone. His 8k split was 21:05 i think.
If the shoes and pacing lights even give 1/4 second per lap advantage, he would have run what Cheptegei's new WR is.
Speculation galore, but a dominate competitor like Bekele is probably a better runner than cheptegei. Maybe cheptegei wins double gold at the next Olympics and I'll change my mind.
True fact: Every time someone has run under 12:40 it has been a world record. Will this streak continue or will Cheptegei fade to a WEAK 12:38 or so?
Every time someone has broken 26:25 it has also been a world record.
This is a good stat, thank you!
We can really see Bekele's dominance here as he holds 4 of the top 10 all time 10k performances. Geb has 2 (3 if you want to go out to top 11), all others have only one.
