the degree to which people don't understand this infuriates me
to answer the question -
ALMOST 100% OF THE TIME
distance runners really don't understand just how athletically gifted people can be. They think because they were pretty good compared to their track teamates that they are athletically gifted as a runner. No, because if you were athletically gifted as a runner, you would almost certainly be playing a sport like football or basketball or soccer.
Let me say this loudly for the people in the back - TALENTED ATHLETES DON'T RUN TRACK, THEY PLAY SPORTS
and for that matter, they definitely definitely don't run distance.
Everybody is shocked that newbury park is as talented as they are, I'm shocked that Brosnan got them to run track but I'm not shocked that the talent is there. I guarantee there is at least one 4:10 or equivalent miler in every graduating class of any high school with at least a thousand kids.
Nobody likes hearing this, but track talent is very very low tier athletic talent.
The only reason anybody ever runs is because they had a parent who used to run.
Playing football is absolutely not an option for a distance runner. People like to believe talented runners play soccer but it’s not a big HS sport in the U.S. There’s no “Friday Night Lights” and the best athletes play other sports which is why the U.S. team is not competitive internationally.
There was no 4:10 miler in my graduating class. I ran the fastest mile in middle P.E. at 5:30 a potential 4:10 guy would be closer to 5:00.
HS athletes usually pick the sport where they have the most talent. For a distance runner, football is out of the question and for my HS, it was difficult to make the basketball and baseball teams. Unlike other posters, I don’t believe the kid that ran 5:00 in middle school is going to choose a different 2nd tier sport like soccer. Posters have stories about talented runners that don’t compete but athletes with talent for other sports have done the same thing.
Why did you run XC/Track in HS? I assume you didn’t have 8:40 talent.
