The Shawshank Redemption is not a good movie. I’d rank it somewhere near Forest Gump in terms of artistic quality ie most people like it because it doesn’t make any obvious mistakes, has skilled actors, and it’s long so they feel like they have to like it because of the time investment.
It was written by Stephen King (or based on a story of his or something). While he is definitely a “skilled writer”, his understanding of art is on the level of George Lucas: Great for 12 year old boys and selling merchandise but not much else. It took Stanley Kubrick of all people to turn The Shining into a compelling piece of art. You can say it’s a “good movie” but to expect that someone would like it or want to watch it more than once is ridiculous.

it is one of the most rewatched movies of all time. was on tnt or amc on a loop for years and still plays quite often. people don't have to pretend to like it. they just like it.
Steve is such a baby haha I can't imagine what level of getting bullied and feeling sorry for oneself created such an imbecile on a running message board.
I hate it. But if it didn't get so much love, from both critics and the masses, I could probably just dismiss it as just another sentimental, sanitized, mainstream movie with lazy voiceovers and no real depth.
