I changed my mind, the true cowards were the British which were avoiding each others (it's a well known fact between Coe and Ovett).
The only exception for Aouita is when he chosen the 5000m in the Olympic Games 1984 at the last time. That was because he promised to King Hassan II a gold medal one year before. I he didn't take a risk to disappoint him.
Look at the face of Coe at the end of this race ... or the "douche froide" of the British pride.
Yeah, where was Aouita that night? Oh, I remember, ducking Cram and Coe as usual.
Don't you think you just contradicted yourself (again) by stating that the British always avoided each other and then you post a video of Cram beating Coe?
BTW, that was peak form Crammy beating a below par Coe (he had been having back problems for a little while, after beating Cram with ease in an 800m at the start of the season (despite spending the winter training for a move up to 5000m)).
The only reason Aouita even faced Crammy at Nice was because Cram had just lost to Tom McKean over 800m and pulled out of another race due to injury, so everybody thought he was in poor shape and going to get whipped by Aouita (and Cruz!). Aouita never dared to race peak Cram again.
No one has run 3:26 clean. El G's 3:26.0 was at the height of the EPO era. In that era Lagat run 3:26 low and Ngeny run a 3:26 equivalent mile. They all ran perhaps 2 to 3 secs faster than their natural limit due to EPO.
For this fact alone, El G's record has lasted so long and been untouched, except for a Kenyan who was also busted for EPO. It is not possible for anyone anytime soon to run faster than 3:26 clean. Hence why these new revolutionary spikes/shoes have been allowed the past 3 and a half years, during which time countless distance records have been broken and the sheer depth in fast times has increased at a incredible rate. If one looks at LetsRun's own general analysis I read on here yesterday, comparing the current indoor season at elite and college levels with the last indoor season when there were no 'super spikes', 2018-19, then on average the stats show that the new shoes improve 800m performance by 0.6secs and 1500m by c.3 secs. Yes the improvement in time as the distance increases is not exponential, as the evidence shows that the greater the distance the bigger the percentage assistance given.
So, if we are going to be realistic and not live in LaLa Land, Jakob's recent indoor WR was more likely worth around 3:33, and his Olympic victory last year more like a 3:31 flat. He is possibly going to get down to something approaching 3:26 in the next few years, but this will only be because he is getting a 'consevative' 2 secs extra due to his spikes (viz a viz El G's performance) and another second for the ever improving tracks and the strobe light pacing. So in essence a 3:26 now is more like a 3:29 pre super spikes.
Then, of course, you also have to take into consideration that we are comparing him to someone who was almost certainly running times assisted by EPO. Take away Jacob's spikes and the faster tracks and take away El G's EPO and ped regimen and there would not be much between them in terms of ability and time.
Unfortunately I think we now live in an era of sport (T&F at least), where comparisons between different eras based on times are pointless due to the technical changes of the past 3 years. Therefore an athlete has to be judged on their record at the major champs and in head to head competitions against their peers. Based on this, Jacob has already proved himself to be a great runner and the best at the moment. But his times (and those of all competing now) are pretty meaningless. I mean, I still consider Ed Moses to be head and shoulders above any other athlete in his event, despite Warholm running over a second faster. Moses had such a long unbroken string of victories and won many championship races, which Warholm will have to go some way to match.

El G doesn't need anyone defending him. His record is spotless. Multiple-time Olympic Gold and World medalist. Absolute GOAT over 1500m. Interesting thing is that he and Yakob run the same style races.. only difference I notice is that El G was more fearless. Yakob has yet to take a race out the way El G used to, which is why perhaps he could threaten the record.
Mr Guerrouj didn't take races out. He followed in succession behind a parade of rabbits, one of whom was to become Olympic champion in the Mile King's second quest for 1500m gold.
I think both these takes are off.
El G definitely drafted at times but led the last 800 or so of his greatest race (Athens) and was often past the rabbits and getting drafted on by Lagat, Ngeny, et al in non-champ races. Including in Sydney.
But his record is not spotless. One OG in 3 tries is not spotless.

2 or 3 seconds for EPO is conservative, looking at the studies that have been done, anecdotal reports, and prime examples such as Ramzi, and perhaps Katir.
Then add another second at least due to the roids and HGH that El G in particular was certainly taking to near full throttle levels (the HGH full throttle as there was no testing for that either, which is why his teeth were sticking out of his face by 2004 and the Moroccan team was the only one in history to employ a full time dentist). He was also benefitting from being paced by, competing against, and having teammates all similarly juiced to the gills.
The reality is that we were living in clown world during the EPO era. El G was likely taking EPO and other stuff since his mid teens. If Ramzi can improve 6 seconds in one year, El G may never have broken 3:40 if he had been born 10 years later.

Running alone the last two laps isn't akin to taking races out. Jakob snatched the early lead in Tokyo. What championship did El G lead early and run under 3:30?

80% of the work in Tokyo was done by Cherruiyot in a fast track.
