So let's do what you say they should do. They stream the thing for free. If so, they'd be really lucky to get 5000 people to watch it live. Do you know how little ad revenue that brings in? On youtube, it's like maybe $10 per 1000 views so they'd bring in $50? Now this is a long broadcast so you could run more ads.
So double it - they bring in $100. Quadruple it and it's $200.
They had at least 10 minutes in-between races where they could have shown full length commercials. It wouldn’t have made THAT big of a difference…but an obvious point where they could get some revenue instead of a shot at the park in silence.
