This is the most D2 post ever.

I'm a former D2 runner spending Thanksgiving with my GF's family. When we were making plans a month ago she encouraged me to run the local 10K turkey trot, so I signed up thinking I could win it as my morning jog and impress her HS friends and siblings, etc. (winning times from previus years are around 40 min; it's a tiny town in Maryland). Yesterday she mentioned that her dad is also running it. When I asked her if he's racing it, she said "you know him, he says he's doing something just for fun and then he goes all out and pretty much risks a heart attack just to show that he's a beast".
The truth is, her dad is 54 but trains year round for ironmans and runs at least 35 miles a week on top of his rigorous cycling regiment. I haven't trained consistently since I graduated a year and a half ago, and have put on 15-20 pounds since I ran competitively. My road 10K PB is 31:40, but I honestly don't know if I can run a 36 min 10K right now. Even if I can, it'll be an all out effort and I'll be totally gassed by the end of it. I'm pretty worried her dad will beat me.
Is it better to try to fake an injury and bail on the race (might be obvious why I'm doing it), or to go down fighting and possibly puke my guts out losing to an old man?
I should mention that my GF's whole family is really athletic/competitive. She played volleyball in college and her twin brothers are being recruited to play D1 lacrosse.
