This is what we call a jog. Unless you are very old or handicapped, don't bother racing at this pace. Instead, do 200 and 400 repeats until your race pace is in the lower 7s. You need to learn to SPRINT first, because 8:00 pace is jogging.
Absolute pace does not dictate whether a person is racing; it is the pace relative to those who are contending to win the race. If you are running 5:30 pace and those competing for the win are going 5:00, you aren't really racing in the normal sense of the word. That is what we call a time trial. On the other hand, a bunch of people all around 8:00 going against each other is much more like an actual race.
So unless you are elite or in college/high school, odds are you aren't racing just like the 8:00 runners aren't racing. Neither of you are relevant to the actual contenders, who are in fact racing. You are just going for a time that you consider personally satisfying and maybe getting a participation / age group trophy.
Call it racing if you want. No one (except people like you) really cares what you call it. Just stop thinking that what you are doing is any different than what the 8:00 people are doing.
