14:42 for a 23 year old isn't a "pretty bad performance". It's #4 US all time and she's probably a bit past her peak. Plus, given some slightly better splits she probably would've been in the 14:30s.
You wouldn't say a 3:39 1500 for an 18 year old is a pretty bad performance because the world record is 13 seconds off, or that an 18 year old just ran a 3:34, you'd say it's a great performance given the circumstances.
It is 36 seconds off the world record. Would you say that a guy running 13:13 is a great performance or just a very good performance?
