It's funny to see Trumpers blaming Joe Biden. The Trump administration signed a "peace" deal with the Taliban and set and announced a schedule for full US troop withdrawal, culminating in final withdrawal May 1st 2021. There were about 13,000 US troops in country at that time and just a couple thousand there when Biden assumed office this year. The Biden admin extended final withdrawal by a few months, but otherwise kept the Trump agreement with the Taliban in place.
I don't see how anyone who supported Trump's deal can now criticize Biden, except for being blatantly politically dishonest.
A peace deal with the Taliban! Stupid and useless. That said, and as dumb I think it was to make any deal with the Taliban and announce a withdrawal schedule, it's clear that we would never have been able to leave and also have a stable Afghan government capable of keeping its people safe and keeping the Taliban out. We certainly did try over twenty years. Oh how we tried. Building bases, training and equipping the ANA with the hope of turning it all over to them safely. Clearly now they were never capable of doing it on their own and we would have had to stay there indefinitely.
This situation has deteriorated under Biden. This is on him, not Trump. I was not a fan of Trump, but if he was president we would not be watching US Citizens airlifted out of the Kabul embassy as we flee Afghanistan, and I guarantee he would not be begging the Taliban to not attack the embassy in order to save face. Trump recalculated his Afghanistan timelines multiple times based on conditions on the ground. Biden has been Commander in Cheif for 6 months. The buck 100% stops with him.
With either Trump or Biden the Taliban would have gained control of the country. Trump would have just handed it over to them and Biden mistakenly believed the Afghan army would fight. The real issue is that no matter how well armed and trained an army is there needs to be a will to fight. They are certainly not willing to die to help the Afghan government maintain control because they know it's a losing cause.
This is not a problem either Trump or Biden could solve. The optics for Biden look bad but this was always going to be the outcome.
