Most people that I have known that have lied have had no clue about running and their claims didnt sound reasonable to anyone that knows the sport. The last guy I remember claimed he used to be able to run a 4:30 mile and an 11:00 2-mile. I told him those two times are not equivalent ability levels and he proceeded to explain to me that you will run slower over longer distances because you have to pace yourself to run farther
I generally don't think most serious runners lie about their times to other runners. Maybe I am naive.
Sure there have been some "runners" such as Mike Rossi, Kip Litton, and Frank Meza who have pulled stunts to "run" fake marathon times but I believe they are in a minority and that they usually have underlying mental illness issues. And of course on these boards we used to have Antonio Cabral who claimed to be an expert coach and to have ran 3'39" for 1500m among other things - how many people fell for that one?
