Of course, you also could have simply said, "He says what the deplorables want to hear, and they support and vote for him."
And the more I think about it, the more I wonder if - semantic squabbles aside - the word "gifted" really applies? Is it possible that Trump does not have "special gifts" of any kind and that rather it's just a perfect storm? Perhaps he's JUST a disgusting, unfiltered, blowhard rich guy lie factory who decided to get into politics at a time when he'd have a large receptive audience? (although, admittedly, this may have been true at ALL times in US history)
Maybe he's not particularly "gifted," maybe he just happens to be the first example of someone that gross and frank being willing to run for office? And it worked. But that's not to say that it wouldn't have worked at many other times in our history, and thus he doesn't get "credit" for "good timing," or other such senses of awareness and skill with which you're inclined to compliment him.
