Remarkably, it's a bipartisan success. Roughly the same proportion of Dems and Rs voted yes for it! We've done it! We've come together as a nation!
Now let's hope Ted Cruz or Mike Lee doesn't decide to blow up the world in the senate.
I'm savoring the passing of the bill. The vast middle coming together to make the crazy extremists irrelevant. Nice!
The crazy extremists on BOTH sides. Also, 3.4% unemployment is two low. Conservatives DO NOT want to get rid of the democracy (actually the republic). We love having a democracy/republic. It is the Liberals who moan and whine when the electoral college decides the election (as the Constitution intended). We want the popular vote to decide each election because the popular vote generally favors the Dems. So we will whine and moan about it and ignore precedent.
Trump has said he wants to suspend the Constitution
A majority of Rs in the House voted to overturn the 2020 election
Thousands of Rs attacked Congress when it tried to certify the winner of the 2020 election.
Sen Mike Lee of Utah says democracy is not core to the US or particularly needed.
Texas has passed legislation that will allow the state to delete millions of Dem votes in Houston
Our own fetterman has said that he's fine if democracy goes away.
Rs have perfected gerrymandering to in effect make many states impossible for Dems to win, and entrenching minority rule.
You are kidding yourself if you think right wing America is fine with democracy and not thinking the whole experiment might be over if it means they have to actually, you know, lose elections.

note that the electoral college is explicitly anti-democratic. That's why it's there. To blunt democracy. So you are contradicting yourself: you are saying 'yay democracy' and in the same breath 'yay electoral college so we can have less democracy!'

Trump is nuts if he truly wants to suspend the Constitution. Greatest document ever written. It makes this country what it is. Anyone who indeed wants to do away with the democracy/republic should be sent to North Korea for a primer on how much worse other forms of government are.

The US has never been an actual democracy. It has always been a representative democracy and a republic.
The precedent is the exact opposite of what you're claiming.

We are not disagreeing on anything, as far as I can tell.

Only thjng I’d slightly disagree with you on is that it’s not the Constitution that makes this country what it is…it’s the willingness of everyone to follow it. Norms and habits. the massive danger here is that right wingers are starting to say ‘eh we will do what we want and we don’t care about norms and habits. The leader of the Rs is explicitly anti- constitution and he has an 80% approval rating of Republicans.

I agree with a lot of what you say but it is the Dems who are not respecting the Constitution - they want to ignore the 2nd Amendment and also want to remove many aspects of the 1st. They want to control free speech. Dictate what can and can not be said.

Which side wants to get rid of the electoral college because they don't like losing elections?
Which side wants to expand and pack the Supreme Court because they don't like not having control?
Rs want to ignore and violate and suspend the Constitution through ignoring it and violence.
Ds want to amend and fix the Constitution through legal ways.
massive difference. As you know, the Constitution has been legally amended dozens of times. That's fine. What's not fine is an ex-president saying 'suspend it.' Or violent right wing mobs trying to prevent congress from doing its constitutional duties.
And there is nothing unconstitutional about enlarging the Supreme Court, but there is no serious effort to do it anyway.

A few hundred morons on 1/6 do not represent the Republican party. Trump's "suspend" comment was a Truth Social rant about election fraud not a Republican position.
Meanwhile, getting rid of the electoral college, court packing and and attacking the 1st and 2nd amendments are main stream Democrat positions.
That sounds very like a conservative argument or set of talking points. Weren't you saying things contrary to this a few days or weeks ago?
I've never been one of the leftist economic doom and gloomers. I recognize the astonishing and growing wealth and success of this nation and try never to engage in 'it was so much better in the 1970s' absurdities or all these fallacious moral panics over inequality.
I agree with you. The living standard for Americans is incredibly high compared to nearly everywhere else in the world. And I've seen it continue to rise decade to decade in the US. I think it's due to a unique and progressive system of collaboration between government, higher education, and free enterprise/business that truly does create wealth for everyone. Nowhere else in the world, not even the Western democracies, has anything like it. While there are certainly people in the US who are living difficult lives (homeless), I don't see their troubles being an inherent part of the American system. See India or Russia or Brazil, for example, if you want to see systems that are specifically designed to keep large percentages of the citizens in poverty.

hah -tens of millions of Rs support J6 and the effort to cancel the election results, including the leader of the party, and you know it.

The poor get screwed again.
Are you EVER going to answer these questions below? I'm sitting here like patience on a goddam monument trying to get simple elaborations and clarifications from you, and you're off spanking around with Commie cliches like the one above.
Here. Repeated below for ease of reference. Jesus goddam Christ. What is with you mooners? --------------------------------- What law, rule, code or standard do you think requires someone to report to you and the "we"s about the extent of a cop's injuries for every federal criminal proceeding in which a cop's injuries are possible evidence?
And who do you think owes this duty/obligation that you believe exists to report the cop's injuries to whoever "we" is?
What manner are you saying that such notice of the cop's injuries should have provided to you? Your post reads like you expect public Notices regarding cop injuries in the mail or from the town crier on a periodic basis.

nah. The Dems, if anything, are attacking this invented right of using guns for any purpose except what THE CONSTITUTION mentions. Funny how you always leave off the milita part. There nothing regarding the personal use of arms....nothing, nada, zip. The legal idea was created in the last 20 years. We don't have to divine some hidden intent about how the founding father really meant an individual right, just read the text. Something you so called constitution lovers fail to do.
Even with that nonsense, Scalia himself declared that 2A rights are not unlimited (the current GOP position).

The invention is the leftist notion that the 2nd amendment applies only to muskets and colonial militias.
Anyone who thinks firearms weren't for personal use in colonial times is a fool. Hunting wasn't invented in the 20th century.
"The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms." - Samuel Adams, Massachusetts Ratifying Convention, 1788
"The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed." - Thomas Jefferson, letter to to John Cartwright, 5 June 1824
"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." - Thomas Jefferson, Virginia Constitution, Draft 1, 1776

Nope. Any restriction at all on the right to bear arms is an attack on the 2A. Land mines, missiles, machine guns, grenades. All Constitutionaly protected. We have the god-given right to self defense, and any R who says those items should not be owned by private citizens is anti-American and maybe even worse a RINO.

Wanting to ban all semi-automatic weapons is a more extreme position than wanting the right to own land mines.
There's a middle ground and as always the left is no where near it.

Hold on there, Mr. so-called "Legal Beagle." Isn't the linked case (Heller) the leading SCOFUS case on the association of the prefatory "militia" and operative "bear arms" clauses of the Second Amendment? The majority makes a compelling case that the prefatory clause recites a non-limiting purpose -- the need for militias -- that makes the operative clause -- protecting an individual's right to bear arms -- necessary for the formation of the aforementioned militias. It's very crafty. You can't form a militia if you don't have a goddam gun in the first place, is the reasoning in laygoon's terms.
Even if it's not compelling to you, it is the law of the land, so you're stuck with it. Arguments like you just made that the Second Amendment says a citizen can only bear arms as part of a militia have been meritless since 2008 when Heller was decided. 15 years is a long time to be carrying around a legal falsehood, Chaucer.
