This is why it’s so necessary to do your best and not get stuck in a tactical race. Who cares about top 3 if you don’t actually get to go to Paris because the race was too slow and tactical.
Uhh, it was too hot to run the standard.
I’m wary of criticizing these athletes who are worlds better than I’ll ever be from the safety of my couch, but they were capable of running faster than 31:40 (to get more points for rankings) as evidenced by the 5:49 last 2k.
That said, Kelati can’t be criticized since she has the standard, and I think we should cut Valby some slack after all the incredible front running she’s done this year, including practically the entire 5k only to finish 4th. Nobody was up to the task outside of the top 3, so that really puts some onus on Karissa, who seems to be fully indoctrinated by the Jerry school which means following on the rail till the last lap no matter what.
But if you take Monson off the list, you have to add in one of the other Americans who's still ahead of Valby (i.e. Henes or Rogers).
You do not have to add them. USATF will enter the top runners from trials if they are qualified in any way. This includes if they would be qualified bypassing higher ranked Americans on the road to Paris list.
Right now the three Americans listed in the Top 27 of Road to Paris are Monson (injured), Kelati (obviously in) and Izzo (counts as having the standard from cross country, but finished well back at the trials). Then you have O'Keeffe (in between 25 and 26, but only doing the marathon), Henes (right after 27th, Kokai from Japan), then Rogers with 1215 points behind 28th place.
Let's say hypothetically due to people who don't enter Henes ends up 27th on the Road to Paris list, but Lukan from Slovenia is 28th and Valby is still behind her. I don't see how the US could send Valby in that situation. If Henes doesn't go, Valby wouldn't be qualified, because then Lukan would get to go. Am I wrong about that?
Now yes, if a few more people dropped and Henes were at 26th on the list, then Lukan could be 27th, Valby would be 28th, and theoretically if you drop Henes, then Valby would be 27th. So I can see how she would go in that scenario.
Hard to resist holding off on Trump. You know Kelati came from a sh*thole country as Donnie would say.
Trump lives in your head rent free. And he’ll be living in the White House on January 20
Kelati escaped the repression in Eritrea and sought asylum in America. That's specifically what Trump has railed against. Now she's proudly representing the USA in Paris. That is a true American story.
"As of Tuesday, based on the current Road to Paris List, and our own calculations after Lukan’s Euros performance (Remember: It’s a moving target!), Valby’s best shot at making the team in the 10,000m would be to get to an average of 1210 (to go ahead of Lukan’s 1209-point total). Since WA scores the average of an athlete’s two best results, and Valby’s Bryan Clay showing is worth 1221, she needs at least a 1199-point showing to get there. She can do so by: – Finishing 3rd at the Trials and running 31:43.72 or faster: 45 placing points + 1154 result points = 1199 performance score. – Finishing second at the Trials and running 31:49.35 or faster: 50 placing points + 1149 result points = 1199 performance score – Winning the Trials and running 32:00.65 or faster = 60 placing points + 1139 result points = 1199 performance score."
Lukan is listed on the Road to Paris site with 1218 points, not 1209. Valby's still behind her.
Using Citius calculations, Valby has an average score of 1212.50. Still behind Lukan's 1218. That's adding 1154 results points plus the 50 points for placing second.
Her time of 31:41.56 is better than the 31:43.72 calculated for 1154 pts though. How many more points do you get for 2 seconds faster?
If Valby had won, using these calculations, she would have 1217.5.
Henes and Rodgers will now be far behind Valby after this race. Valby will get lots of points for getting 2nd in a champ final.
Bummed for Hennes, but still impressive to have lung surgery earlier in the year and then be in the mix for alot of the race.
I believe Valby gets 50 bonus points for her 2nd place, which as I posted earlier isn't enough to jump her over Henes and Rodgers.
Yeah, I think you're right, Valby is still far off. One night I had insomnia so stayed up trying to figure out how the world ranking works. You have a better grasp of it than I do!

Not a fake asylum claim like we have now.
You seem so tolerant and almost certainly voted for Biden: have you personally housed a migrant?

But if Hennes and Rodgers aren't selected, then they are out and Valby goes up at least three places (Warner-Judd, Hennes and Rodgers) and is?

I forgot to get rid of Katie Izzo from the list of 27 going but then Karissa is going to move past Valby, so we are still looking at beating No. 28 Lukan.
If Sifan Hassan doesn't run the 10,000 that's another spot that opens as the 4th person from the Netherlands is pretty far down.
