“I was there yesterday . . . . . . at the Capitol building. . . . . I was liiiiin that . . . . like on the front line . . . . . . it was amazing.” Jan. 6 defendant Melanie Lanham, an organizer, de-clutterer and event planner, has been sentenced to 18 months of probation.
By violent insurrectionists, you are referring to a stay-at-home mother of three that needed to pee that didn't hurt anyone. Is this what keeps you up at night? She was basically a non-violent protestor. Just hope the justice system is treating those who participated in the BLM riots to the same standard.
yes when I have to pee I would clearly walk by tear gas, cops being beaten, windows being smashed, right on into a government building under siege, looking for that bathroom. When you gotta go you gotta go, amirite?
It's a common refrain from some of those charged in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol and their Republican allies: The Justice Department is treating them harshly because of their political views while those arrested during...
PHOENIX (AP) — More than 10,000 people have been arrested in protests decrying racism and police brutality in the wake of George Floyd's death, according to an Associated Press tally of known arrests across the U...
Remember, trumpers think that BLM was nothing but riots and burning. They don’t know about the 99% of the demonstrations that had no violence. They have a warped view of that summer and cannot be reasoned with.
they think if you went to a BLM March you committed violence.
14,000 arrests, mostly on minor curfew violations where the charges were dropped across over 7,000 events (an average of 2 arrests per event).
Two Brooklyn activists who set fire to an NYPD homeless outreach van in Greenwich Village in July 2020 were sentenced to six months in prison on Friday.
That’s almost three years less than the sentence handed down to the so-called QAnon Shaman, Jacob Chansley, who became the face of the Capitol riot after being photographed wandering around in a Viking hat and face paint. He committed no violence, damaged no property and was unarmed, but he spent more than 10 months in prison without trial before he was slapped with a 41-month sentence plus three years of supervised release.
Compare the zero-jail term given to BLM rioter Mohamed Hussein Abdi, who tried to set fire to a high school in Minneapolis and was sentenced to just probation earlier this month. Or BLM rioter Montez Terriel Lee, who was sentenced to 10 years in jail for burning down a pawn shop in Minneapolis and killing a 30-year-old man inside. Unlike the piecemeal legal treatment of the BLM riots, the criminal investigation into the Capitol riot is the largest in US history. Many people believe BLM was given passes for acts of violence. The “scope and scale … are really unprecedented, not only in FBI history, but probably DOJ history,” boasted Michael Sherwin, the zealous federal prosecutor formerly in charge of the investigation. But you don’t need Sherwin to tell you that America is operating two unequal systems of justice when it comes to Democrat-friendly BLM and the Trump supporters arrested over the Capitol riot. The final irony is that BLM is using the mayhem it created as an excuse for leniency. Louisville BLM organizers reportedly claimed that their man Quintez Brown [a BLM organizer and anti-gun activist touted by Obama as a rising star who attempted to assassinate a Jewish political candidate and was subsequently released on bond (paid for by BLM)] may have been suffering from PTSD after two years of social unrest.
Hannity forced to testify under oath regarding Trump's claims of voter fraud. "I didn't believe it for a second". None of them did. Lou Dobbs, Jeanine Peirro and Maria Bartiromo. Every night after Trump lost they went on the air to shamefully lie to their viewers because they were told to by Rupert. So many illegal and fraudulent schemes to keep the Orange dictator in office as long as possible. And it worked well. How do we know?
We have threads on Letsrun with right wing goof balls that ate that stuff up and repeated these same lies. They really believed that idiocy.
This is Peak GOP. While you are scheming to steal the election on multiple fronts launch a full scale slander and lie campaign to accuse others of doing exactly what you are doing.

Of course, I broadly agree. But again, don't agree with letting folks off the hook. In this case, the Fox personalities who "did what Rupert told them to do." He might have, but the more accurate way to put it is, "So that they could continue to personally make a ton of money."
Regarding the audience, what fraction of Fox viewers ACTUALLY don't have the mental power to see through lies and BS? We can let that tiny fraction off the hook for enabling the possible destruction of a country. The rest? Nope.

1) BLM-associated protestors breaking the law. Throw the book at them.
2) Jan 6 protesters who were there to overturn a fair election - and at the POTUS level, no less (AND might have broken other laws). Throw the book at them.
So how easy that is? But you're not capable of it. Because you're a moran.
Moreover, it DOESN'T bother you that the rich, powerful people who encouraged Jan 6 and did other things to try to overturn the election largely have not been punished. And not only does that fail to bother you, but you very possibly continue to send them your hard-earned cash.
Lastly, IF you were to ask a rationale person to pick WHICH thing to treat more seriously, I wonder which they ought to choose? They don't HAVE to choose, fortunately, but if they did? The non-moran would choose, "Let's make sure that we don't lose our 200+ year-old democracy." The Trumper moran chooses, "Property damage" (while completely overlooking or massively downplaying the little attempted election theft thing).
And was there more than property damage in BLM? Yes. But if it was ONLY property damage - and even just minor property damage - you'd STILL pick that one.

It is a bit remarkable how tribalism and the right wing media has been successful in minimizing and reframing Jan 6. The day of the event there was widespread and even bipartisan disgust with what was witnessed by everyone with their eyes and ears. And everyone knew exactly why it took place because everyone saw the President lying constantly and stirring it up. It wasn't debatable. At that time, it seemed we had reached a tipping point where law and order was going to take the lead back from bipartisan BS.
Today the right wing doesn't want to talk about it or they try to "both sides" it with BLM protests. Or dismiss it by saying it doesn't fit their self crafted definition of "sedition". Jan 6th was just the last piece of an orchestrated plan to overturn the election by criminal grifters that wanted the US to keep turning into an Autocracy to be rewarded financially. The other plans are all known and laid out by Trump's people testifying under oath.
Yet today, all the ringleaders of this chaos are walking free and the chief originator is running for Prez again and his political party still lives in fear of him and his followers. And all the chief grifters, Bannon, Stone, Gates are overtly planning more of the same.
It is easy to blame the grifters but they would not be able to do so without their gullible griftees.

this is the danger of a talented demagogue like trump. He's changed the playing field of US politics. You can't even imagine a R politician who would say anything like 'hey elect me I'll get the other half of the nation to like us more.' No. R politicians have to say 'elect me so I can go and fight democrats, our true enemy.'

It's bloody catastrophic.
You are right.
And Trump brought something to politics that nobody had ever seen to such a degree. And that is the ability to have absolutely no shame. There is absolutely nothing that can shame Trump. There is no reality that can be presented to him that he we not dismiss, call fake news and move on. And for some reason a good portion of the US population is OK with that. He is not harmed politically in any way for any of his lies about anything.
You can see that many in the GOP saw this recipe for success and are now following it. That is why we have Santos. Expect more of these.

The people who stole stuff and broke stuff during the BLM protests mostly ran away or were hidden by large crowds. The Jan 6 dudes had a little photo shoot at Pelosi’s desk. They kind of did it to themselves.

FOX is in the business of lying, not entertainment. Even if this open lying is not regulated, there will at least be a monetary consequence for their lies when they are ordered to pay 1.6 billion to Dominion.

How do you get someone dirty when they live in mud? The GOP's most useful idiot of all time... but what it really exposed is that there really is no law and order in this country for the rich and powerful. That is unfortunately not just a Republican issue.. there just seems to be such little will to prosecute. Brazil's handling of Bolsonaro's coup attempt is putting the US to shame and exposing us as a real banana republic.
Parts of the report written by the GA grand jury investigating trump are released:
Looks like some trumpers are going to be held accountable for their perjury. Of course, trump is sending more of his supporters to jail because that's how mob bosses work. Always the foot soldiers get arrested, rarely the boss.
NYT:
The section on potential perjury says, in its entirety: “A majority of the Grand Jury believes that perjury may have been committed by one or more witnesses testifying before it. The Grand Jury recommends that the District Attorney seek appropriate indictments for such crimes where the evidence is compelling.”

So True. White collar Crimes by powerful people never gain traction to complete prosecution. Often because those that are charged with holding them accountable have histories with the same good ole boys clubs. All you need to do is research Garland and Schumer's and Bill Barr's history in politics and law. Hell even Blaggo (a Democrat) who went to jail was pardoned by Trump.
But we are in a period where white collar crimes are morphing with transnational crime rings and these new politicians have found big money to be made by selling out the US interests for personal gain. And they have zero qualms about enriching themselves by selling the US out to people representing enemies of the US. Meanwhile they distract US citizens with culture wars about drag shows and M&M colors.

I worry about the time decay on this and again unwillingness to prosecute him... but Trump may pull a Lance and let his ego be his end.
