I think it's because they usually get between about 11 and 18 golds in the pool and they're currently sat on 6 with a max two more tomorrow and then swimming is finished.
China are going to dive the divies, ping the pongies and shoot the shooties all week, while the USA's medal hopes tend to sit with a couple chances per night on the track and then team events like basketball and volleyball at the end. Biles might get a couple more, mind you.
To be fair, it's good to see the gold medal count quite evenly spread between a lot of countries.
