God these announcers ae struggling tonight. Ato - my guy- called it a collegiate record. Ok, taht's the equivalent of a typo. But why are they calling it a big 2 in the 400h. I fully expected dos Santos to beat Benjamin and he did.
I also knew why Warholm bombed He hadn't raced in weeks. How did they not know that? I thought he'd either win or DNF.
Warholm went out too hard and couldn't hold his form after 250m. WA splits say he went out in 11.09 for his first 100 - 0.15 faster than the next fastest runner at 100. His last 100 was 14.67
That's how to won Olympic gold though, but no longer in that kind of shape.
jakob had a good strategy. if he was fast, it could have played into his hands how early wightman went by him. He certainly had time sprint by him around the final turn. only had one gear the entire race.
who knows what the circumstances are, but he clearly is not as good as he was last year. maybe the dual 1500/5000 training?
That was my thought as well. Tokyo 2020 Ingebrigtsen blows by Wightman there like he did Cheruiyot.
No excuses though. Nice race from Ingebrigtsen but Wightman was better today. After his win in Rabat it looked like he was back and could medal, but I never imagined it would be gold.
Why are the announcers acting like this was an upset? Dos Santos should have been considered the favorite coming in given the injuries to Warholm/Benjamin.
Seriously. By no objective measure should the healthy, undefeated, world leader winning be considered an upset. Yet the announcers the entire week are "Warholm vs. Benjamin" even though anyone else that they talked to (Benjamin, Warholm, Moses) all told them not to forget about Dos Santos.

Did he really just run out of gas? Or did he get injured?

So now we're blasting runners for front running and running hard from the beginning?!?
He went for it. It didnt turn out well. Kudos to him.
Obviously the time off hurt him but hey kudos for going for it.

looked like at about 300m he got hurt. or maybe lost his steps for that hurdle and lost his momentum.
0/0 Norway goes home devestated. What a blow for this Norwegian expecting at least 2/2 on the podium. Warholm apparently wss to injured to sustain all races, Ingebrigtsen kicking himself for making a blunder. But Dos Santos was in incredible shape, ans you cant hate when a winner looks as shocked as Wightman. Still. Wow. Hope the 5000 brings Jakob (and me) some solace. Its silver, and that is great, but there was just one result he truely would by happy about. Great job by Wightman, he made Ingebrigtsen his Mcsweyn.
Wow US 2-3, did not expect that! Congrats Bassitt!!!
I was surprised too but I think we shouldn't have been. Bassitt had the 4th fastest PR of the field if I'm reading the startlist right, and one of the men ahead of him was Warholm.
True I just didn’t expect Warholm to crater into 7th??

It looked like one of the hurdles he landed awkwardly and that was it for his race. Tired legs maybe caused it. I don't think it was an injury.

I'm not blasting him for it. I'm just trying to rationalize why he lost form - perhaps he just missed too much training this year to survive going out that hard.
