Have not read a bit of this thread but I'm with sheila - NCAA should run whatever the WC and OG runs - I don't see a good enough reason to make changes.
Do you think the mile is racist and sexist? If not, you're not fully with Sheila.

it's not the race that is sexist - as you know. She believes one motivation for the change to the mile is because of the allure of the 4 minute mile. Which only applies to men. So her view is that this is an example of decisions made to help men and not women.
It's not a crazy view - you have to admit that sub 4 means something and played some role in the decision. The only question is how big the role is.
Esp since women now lost their goal - sub 4 1500.
this is all rehash but there it is.
Fantastic response, all the way around, Rojo.

What is good for the men is good for Track all around and that includes women. Without men, there would be no Track and Field. Sorry Ladies, this is not a misogynistic remark it just historical fact. What women were running the 1500 the day Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile?
Being able to promote the mile for track and field is good for everyone and is not gender specific.
Is there ANY sport that was started exclusively as a woman's sport that is popular these days? Beach volleyball maybe but is even less mainstream than T&F. Tennis is about the only sport I can think of where the ladies could probably succeed without a men's sport.

Beach volleyball is, if anything, more mainstream than T&F. I see it a lot more then track on TV.

No.
An argument stands on its merit. The length of this thread has no bearing on the soundness of Sheila's argument, which I've already dealt with.
The sex of the person making an argument has no bearing on the soundness of the argument.
The personal best times of the person making an argument has no bearing on the soundness of the argument.
Further, one reason this thread is so long is because people keep making bad arguments, like the poster "fast but what else?" has, or the post I'm responding to now, and then people like myself feel compelled to clean up the mess they made.
Yes. Go find something to do. No one is asking you to do this. Go run.
I am asking him to do this.
2/10 for being a try hard, women did not even run the 1500/mile internationally in the 1950s and the first 1500 in the Olympics was in 1972. Now that WAS discrimination.
What's more the mile is an arcane and arbitrary distance, it's time has passed (stopped being significant at the college level by the mid-1970s).
It's a good event but suited for invitationals, indoors, and a few international meets in the Diamond League.
Poor Sheila, having her contract signed by the old white dudes she despises. Maybe she can use some of her salary to pay for a therapist to resolve her daddy issues.
Switching from the 1500m to the Mile makes no sense. America is finally relevant again at 1500m. Why in the world would we change our best developing ground for athletes. They are 2 different events tactically. Look at all of the success we have had in the last 10-15 years. I may be over simplifying this, but I really hope that don't ruin something that is going well.
On a related topic, it would be nice if college coaches could get a few more women under 4:10, which doesn't seem that fast. And while I'm at it, maybe at few more guys under 3:40 for 1500m. Maybe, this is another reason for the switch, so that the college coaches don't have to be compared to the international scene.
My hope is that we don't start jogging like we did in the 1980's and 1990's again.
I am an old white dude and I met Sheila once and she didn't seem to despise me.
Unfortunately for Canada, Sheila, the misandrist, now has the Olympic standard (due to the recent revision). Hope that she does not end up representing Canada.

Again, I find it hard to believe you're arguing in good faith when you say these things.
"The proposal was put forth by Coach Eric Houle of Southern Utah University (SUU) who experienced first hand the power of the Mile in 2010 when star athlete Cam Levins (CAN) broke 4 minutes in the Mile, a first for SUU

Cam was running 180 mile weeks at some point.
Mr. Houle is cool.
Dibaba is a sub 4:10 miler.

This means nothing to me. How many 1500s is that?

Good one! You can't win the debate so you resort to an ad hominem attack.
You'll be interested to know that just today I received a link to the following youtube video from a female friend (who doesn't happen to be related to me, believe it or not).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0la_UwdG15ESome info from the video: Only 1/5 of Americans identify as feminists. Less than a quarter of women identify as feminists. However, the vast majority of Americans agree with gender equality.
What should this tell you? Most people, including myself, agree with what the original first and second wave feminists fought for, ie equality, but the latest wave of feminists, who look for discrimination by the "patriarchy" in absolutely everything have corrupted the word to such an extent that even women don't want to be associated with it.
Good job, Sheila and defenders.
P.S. if you don't want to watch the video for the commentary, I still highly, highly suggest that you watch at the 6:15 mark. It is one of the funniest things that you'll see all year.
This video about feminists complaining about the abuse that they receive online for their idiotic views also seems very relevant to this thread.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-R7o-2jWItcIf a white male had stated this, would so many on Letsrun be so closed minded? The mile is an imperial measurement. The first definition of imperial is: related to empire. The mile run is a derivative of the British Empire. The metric system was formally adopted during the French Revolution. 1500 metres represents egalitarian opportunity for all.
Ms. Reid is heading for the trolling hall of fame on this one.
