Cockrell runs close to the existing Olympic record, a PB for her, a generally amazing time, and finished 1.5 seconds back - in a 400. Crazy. Too bad the third USA runner couldn't make it for the sweep

What happened to Bol? That was an uncharacteristic performance from her. Did she go out too fast the first 200m causing her to fade in the final 100m or so? Would be interesting to see her 100m splits from this race and her 51.30 PR (not counting the altitude aided 50.95).

COVID croissants ? Noah ate one a few days ago?
This.
I would’ve stopped, turned around and walked back to the locker room to announce my retirement. Good for her that she stuck in there for bronze.
K. Ellis yesterday in the 400m semis: 50.40
Syd today in the hurdles: 50.37.
sigh
She’s 200/400, not 400/800.
GD wrong thread. Please downvote me

COVD is airborne. Someone breathing around him had it. It happens when you travel and are in a place with tens of thousands of people.
COVID is not a food borne illness. I’m surprised there aren’t more cases of gastroenteritis in events like this to be honest.
Come on Grant get that Olympic gold
Slow distance day.
I will be happier with the program tomorrow.

With all these athletes falling off I wonder if one of the bakers in the Olympic village has been coughing on the croissants
with Lyles' case so fresh in my mind, my first thought was whether Bol has covid, too.
After the extremely covid-cautious Tokyo games and now this, makes me wonder if the answer for future Olympics to set policies somewhere in between.
Maybe you don't forbid anyone from competing if they test positive like in Tokyo, but you do require athletes to test and quarantine. Not hard for superspreader events to happen, and they could totally ruin the competition. The way the US athletes are gathering and cheering on their teammates every night, you just need one superspreader event to make a big dent in your medal haul.

While still in the tunnel, Bol looked like she was going to her own execution. She lost before she ever stepped foot on the track today.

SML actually smiled and greeted other runners after that race! My sister once met SML in an airport and raved about how nice she was. I responded by telling her how I have a hard time cheering for SML due to the low number of races and the lack of cheerful celebration/sportsmanship after races. Today SML proved me wrong and I couldn't be happier
All of you SML haters return once she starts winning again, funny stuff.
Nadeem is pure arm strength. It doesn't even look like he puts in much effort compared to the other athletes throwing themselves on the floor.

I think so. She tried to beat Sydney and blew up (physically and mentally). I think she could have secured silver if she just ran her own race.
SML is just on another planet. Congrats.

Was Bol out too fast? I expected her to try to come from behind, but she was nearly even with SML for the first half of the race. She was trying to run 50-point, couldn't do it, and ran 52-low. Cockrell was incredible, as of course was SML.
Yes.
And Kearsse had SML flip the tactic and SML held back slightly at the backstretch while Bol went hard on the backstretch. ...this is the opposite of how each typically run 400h. SMLs acceleration off of hurdle #7 was devastating to Bol. Bol was completely cooked after she went out too fast.
Wouldn't have mattered against SML but she lost Silver running this way
Such a cool 5 minutes for 2 of my favorite athletes. Tara winning the long jump followed by that race and Anna C and the silver medal lining! How does it get any better than that?!
