How many Olympic and World Championship medals have Japanese runners won this century in the 1500 through marathon? How does that number compare to the US medal count?
This exact argument is always brought up and it's complete garbage. We're talking about the marathon, don't bring every single distance into it. The Japanese men are better than the Americans in recent history and they have far more depth. That's just a fact right now and the depth has always been really. What was Rupp today? 7th at a US championship race. Don't even bring him up. His medal was 8 years ago.
I hope he does New York this fall and then Boston Spring 2023. Seems like an appropriately spaced out racing schedule for him based on how he has been running about two races a year for the past few years. Then he'll be 38 and can decide if he wants to retire with all 6 major wins or if he wants to go for another Olympic gold at 39.

In these perilous times we inhabit it is sometimes appropriate to lighten the mood of appropriate and inappropriate humor in order to bring out the humanity of living in difficult times. Those that oppose my humor are the ones that have no qualms of living under the oppression of tyrannical regimes such as those of Putin's Russia, Xi's China, Un's North Korea, and others.

I hope so too. But you just know London and Berlin will put in their own bids wanting big splash returns after Covid.

And despite it all (including their insane Olympic Trials standards) and five years to prepare they didn't produce much in the Olympic marathon in their home country (outside of Osaka who trained in the US).
2021
Japan 6th 62nd 73rd
USA 8th 29th 41st
I guess it was better than Ethiopia who produced three DNF's.
