Gotta be a shame that Taylor Flowers from Stony point ran a 15:47 in August but hasn’t raced since September. Could have maybe helped this team to state. They’re looking good next year with him back though! They only lose 2 seniors. Good for Westwood that they got the last spot though. This team has 4 seniors scoring. Westwood jumped from 6th at districts last year to 4th at regions this year. Lost 3 seniors but Kumarappan went from 19 minute 5k’s to a 16:49.
Yeah, I agree, those Stony Point runners went from really nothing (last year in the 17s and 18s) to really good (15s and 16s) in short order. If they can get another couple to see the light and do what they did, they will be contenders for sure. That is good for Westwood, but I think the region realignment helped them out a ton.
Yeah besides Flowers and Thelen, they return 2 freshmen and a soph from varsity so all 3 will have room to grow and improve. I remember seeing the Milesplit interviews on Stony Point and Westwood where the goals of these teams were to make state, even though they were mediocre last year and lost some key guys. Having Vandegrift, round rock and new braunfels in this region made it a challenge to make state.
Glad that Westwood made it since they are taking big graduation hits. Stony point will have another chance next year. SP is not really a “depth” team but they really found 5 (or even 7) guys this year. And at least 5 for next year.
Westwood interview from earlier in the season. Some people including the interviewer thought they were going too far when they said “state” was their goal. Now everyone knows how realistic of a goal that was.

Any thoughts on Bridgeland? Bridgeland was close to the Woodlands and actually would have beaten them if they had a 5th. Oh wait, they did have one. Cortlin Salge, who was on varsity last year and was scoring for team this year, but might have been done early in the season. They didn’t even make state last year.
Wylie was 5 points away from the Woodlands. But they only lost 2 guys from varsity. Not all surprised that they are good this year.

Good for him! I wonder how he would have done on Southlake this year? Appears Rocky teammates he was close to last year at Garmin were much faster than him this year plus Southlake teammates improved more like Alvarez, Cantù, Freeman, and Bullard.

I think he would have been up there with Alvarez and Freeman like last year. Training must have been different. He would taken Ortiz out of varsity for sure. Ortiz was varsity last year but he wasn’t scoring much
Still hoping that they at least let Fisher run unattached at NXR to see if he makes their top 7 for NXN. Before districts (where he was their 9th) he was like 14th on the team at the chili pepper festival so he’s probably coming back.
Carroll would win NXR without Fisher/Jesuit LA but at NXN they might need him for the team to do well there
Freeman was scoring last year and didn’t do track and wasn’t top 7 at the beginning but now he’s scoring so he’s coming back to shape

Thanks for sending that link to the SP interview. They certainly stepped up their game a lot this past year... they ran the fastest of anyone on that Temple course and there have been a number of solid collegiate runners who ran that course in HS. Going by the interview, it looks like Stephens is the leader of the team even though he is their 4th or 5th guy. Interesting that he could make an impact for their program. Doesn't sound like they necessarily did anything crazy in training. Just some consistency combined with effort that has brought out some talent that they probably didn't know they had.
My predictions for State:
1) SLC
2) A free-for-all for 2nd - 5th.
Girls:
1) SLC / Flower Mound
2) SLC / Flower Mound
3) Free-for-all
Lots of good individuals for both sides. Feels like a really good year, overall, for Texas XC!
