From what I've read, that reserve would be a miserable place to hide in as it has standing water with alligators and snakes. There's a Greyhound station within reasonable walking distance from his parents house so maybe he told them he was heading to the reserve but hopped on a bus instead.
Why would anyone believe anything his parents are saying? They hide behind their attorney instead of reporting her missing and say nothing but oh now they're going to help with the 'search' vs sending police on a wild goose chase? They probably know where he is and probably withdrew a lot of cash recently....
Initially, the police were probably giving a lot of credence to what they were told by the parents. It's possible, if not probable, that part of the quest for evidence at their home was to find evidence to corroborate what the parents were telling the police. This could also have something to do with why the police were scouring the park, stopped for a day and then went back in. There may be further evidence that he's there.
That area is going to be difficult to hide in. There's not a lot of area to set up a camp ground as it is under at least some water throughout the area especially at this time of year after 3 or 4 months of rain. We may never know what happened to the guy as they could find a backpack but no body if he's dead and we'd never know if he's dead or escaped.
