Nah Emma was moving strong, Kiyeng didn’t really go all out after she fell either

Did Kiyeng also think the race was a lap short like the mens steeple?
wow, lap counting fails in both steeples today
I gasped loudly while sitting at my desk...coworkers are like WTF

It seemed like - twice - she kept trying to overtake right on the barriers, not sure that's a good idea. What a shame.
Coburn is one of the best in the world at doing that. Her barrier jumping is usually great.
Oh no!
So much like Jager.
so sad.
Funny that people here criticized the poor 3k steeple guy for sprinting the penultimate lap after the bell was rang too early saying that athletes shouldn't rely on bells and have to keep track themselves and now the women winner who was keeping track herself almost lost the race because she sprinted the penultimate lap thinking they forgot to ring the bell again..
Emma made the big mistake of trying to run with people faster than her and paid for it with a fall. She should have settled in and ran her pace.
(This is a horrible take but what idiots have been saying about Leah, when in reality falls happen when you jump over things.)
Emma also seemed to slow down/ kill her momentum when she caught up to Kiyeng. Bizarre steeple races today.

better chance than not she was going to win if she doesn't fall. not sure what you are talking about.

More fuel for the fire for Tokyo. Don't think she would've been sub 9:03 even without the fall, but still sad to see.

Emma Hotburn's big move there was a FAIL
She didn't make any big move, she was just running her race while Kiyeng was fading hard.
But Emma looked to start fading hard as soon as she caught Kiyeng. You could sense a lazy jump coming on that 2nd-to-last hurdle.

Seems like with Kiyeng only running 9:03.8, Emma probably wasn't going to do much better than her PR (9:02).
Emma realized that she was a little behind pace to break 9 minutes, that's why she pushed it on that last water barrier. Her goal was break 9 minutes or bust. It was worth a shot. Emma running normally and finishing in around 9:02 wasn't very exciting for her.

Can’t ever remember Coburn falling like that.
Near the end of the Prefontaine DL a few years ago.

Hah! Yeah, if she had just run for third and not thought she could win the race she'd be celebrating. How dare her think she's on Kiyeng's level.
Agree, that was the worst take of the OTs.
LRP, regardless of the circumstances, neither of those should have happened in MONACO. It’s a slick well done meet, but there was some sloppiness on display…

I'm not saying the lead runner did anything wrong but I think she barely moved to the left on the water jump and it caused Emma to kind of break her momentum and that caused the problem. I said it immediately. They showed the replay and their hands actually touched. I think Emma thought Kiyeng was falling and it made her barely adjust and fall. Bad break.

I don't think winning was Coburn's number one goal today. I think her goals were, in order:
1. Break 9 minutes
2. Break the American Record
3. Win the race
