A few things.
1) We at LetsRun.com believe a discussion of all-things anti-doping including unconfirmed allegations leads to a cleaner sport. We have always said that when it comes to anti-doping we will err on the side of allowing discussion. For too long the sport did not have an honest discussion of doping. We are going to err on the side of allowing too much discussion.
2) We at LetsRun.com do not pre-screen content. We do not have a truth detector for posts. We let third parties post their opinion. Most of you get that. Thus, there is a lot of speculation that many runners may or may not be doping.
3) While legally we have no obligation to determine the veracity of a post:
http://www.chillingeffects.org/defamation/faq.cgi#QID709if we know for a fact something is false and it is brought to our attention we will remove it.
4) Turning to more specifics, to something like this thread, some of you might believe, if someone says, "Athlete X" tested positive" that can be confirmed or denied. It's a simple factual matter right? Not so fast.
Not saying at all that this happened here, but take Lance Armstrong for example, there were allegations he tested positive and it was covered up. If someone posted that 10 years ago, and it could not be confirmed should we delete the thread? Or swap Centrowitz's name with Asbel Kiprop's. Would your reaction to whether this thread should stay or be deleted be the same? What if we swap it out with Makloufhi's name? What if the language was slightly softer "I heard Athlete X tested positive."? The point is, what many people see as "facts" are not really "facts".
5) I reached out to Ricky Simms, Centro's agent today and alerted him to this thread, told him why it was our policy to allow such discussion and told him the best way I felt to combat it if false, was to issue a statement. Thus, I was glad to see before Ricky got back me that Centro has issued two tweets that address some of the rumors in this thread. I'm putting the tweets below.
6) As for people who say we leave this thread up for page views and ad revenue, I disagree. We didn't feature it on the homepage or promote it at all. I'm clearly pissing off a some of you by leaving it up. The few extra $ from a few page views on one day are not worth it, if I turn you off of letsrun for good. I believe in clean sport, believe in letting people discuss unpopular measures, and will stick by that. That is one reason so many of you do come back and I thank you for that.
Feel free to email me
wejo@letsrun.comif you would like to discuss further.
