The basic facts don't tell the story. John Stephen Akhwari was a marathon runner who represented Tanzania in the marathon in 1968. He didn't win a medal. In fact, he came nowhere near. But, in defeat and in pain, he came to r...
Don't think Bud Greenspan would include either in an Olympics documentary.
Hero effort there.
Additionally, if he had been hurt prior to the race (which it sounds like he wasn’t) I am guessing Tanzania didn’t have another qualified runner waiting in the wings to compete in his place.

I expect professional runners to act professionally. Fiona did not meet that standard here.
And frankly, I think that this is embarrassing for Puma to have one their runners not bow out and let the alternate run just because of the structure of her contract.
You’re embarrassing.
You find logical and ethical behavior embarrassing? So noted.
First, I can't believe you're actually trying to compare running 4:30 with a calf niggle at your local marathon sponsored by Papa Johns Pizza to representing the USA at the OLYMPIC GAMES when you look like this 1k off the starting line:
Even if we give her the benefit of the doubt that it was a shock injury that sprung up in a few days and buy her timing with respect to informing an alternate, that still doesn't excuse her starting the race in this condition. At an absolute minimum she knew how hurt she was during her warmup.
You don't start a race with USA on your chest so hurt that you immediately get dropped by the woman from Bhutan who is just hoping to finish it.
I think USATF is kind of expecting that most athletes will be smart enough to make a call like that on their own, but judging by some of the posters here maybe a little oversight is necessary.
Well as you see in the video she had the decency to cover up the USA.

One a happier note, there was a watch party in Minneapolis at a movie theater from 1 AM to 4 AM on Sunday morning to watch in real time as Dakotah Lindwurm ran the women's marathon. Lots of people there. It was great. Good job Dakotah!!
Some posts on this thread stated that no Americans were competitive in the marathon anyway. I beg to differ. She did us proud.
Ah, so it’s confirmed that you identify as another LetsRun incel then.
3 people eh? Or several vehement mysoginists like yourself and Bob Sack? If you give me an hour, I can flip all the downvotes and upvotes in this thread.
Why not check Fiona’s IG where there are 7500+ enthusiastic supporters including every one of her Olympic teammates and a who’s who of female distance runners.
Run 100 mile weeks living off $30K per year in California for the last 4 years. You are gonna give up your $250K bonus check? STFU.
I wonder about all this Olympic bonus stuff. The only reference I have is that Boris Berian offer, and the only related reference was just a $10k base compensation increase (from $125k) if he made an Olympic final (there was also $7.5k for winning the Olympic Trials - woohoo!). He had just been a World Indoor champ. Fiona won $80k in the Trials. I can't imagine her contract would have anything beyond a pittance to have that even matter all that much in the decision making, but I'm clearly not in the know.
Viewing her IG account the 14 photos from 7/11 that were up this morning are now 3 photos. She clearly has a hitch in her stride, is half hearted throwing a medicine ball and looks miserable.
she new she was injured prior. she flies to paris. the alternate was flown to paris. what a waste of time and money. if i was the alternate, i'd be furious. not a good look for o'keeffe.

Why? Because you got a free trip to Paris? Whomp whomp.

We heard that opinion 16 pages ago.
you really think i have the time to read 16 pages of this drivel? i'm not on summer break like most respondents.
saw her in mammoth lakes training fully before the race. workouts at the track, tempos in round valley, etc. impressive workouts too. you clearly do not know anyone.
a 16 pg thread on an american nothingburger not named tuohy
I mean, that’s how thoroughly she pissed us all of by pulling that crap race when she was injured today, and it’s now happened 3 times in the last 4 marathons for the US team, so we’re really sick of it. It’s embarrassing that our women’s marathon team can’t be competitive at the Olympics.
You have to wonder when USATF knew and why they didn’t substitute a healthy replacement. A. Cragg and NC Puma have managed her right into the ditch, great job.
Don't think they have the power to force an athlete who legitimately made the Olympic team to not compete. Athlete's choice, not USATF's.

So, the number of followers equates to validity of an opinion? Thanks for confirming that individuals like you and FK are what's wrong with society.
