Your overall point is correct that the only realistic way to qualify is a 14:52 and top 3 at trials, but why would her 15:15 at USA's last year not count? Is there some other criteria than being in the window?
At Usatf she will have 2 results counting toward world ranking.
If she goes to Europe before June 30 and runs another one, that would give her 3 total results...and a world ranking.
Obviously, easiest is to hit the standard and finish top 3. But if she made top 3 without standard, my guess is she would jump on a plane.
That's what McGorty and Waskom did successfully last year to make Budapest.
I think the 5000m only needs 3 events to be ranked (and one can be 3000 / 2 mile) and 1500m needs 5 (including mile and road mile).
If Tuohy could get (or have gotten) into a diamond league and place(d) decently that'd help her a lot: 4th gives 120 bonus points and 9th (more likely, especially in a weaker field) gives 55th which turns a 15:03 outdoors (1157) into the equivalent of 14:35 (1212). But I can't see her getting into one
The bolded parts should be a big clue that this ‘pro sport’ deviates from open and fair competition (like in high school sport) but crosses over into an ‘entertainment business’.

But people should also consider whether high school sport in the US is even some big open and fair competition. Much here is made about the NXN, but obviously areas of the country like CA and sections of NY state are going to have a huge advantage in producing young cross-country athletes versus areas like hot-and-muggy TX and FL. For that reason, it is rather amazing KS produced Jim Ryan, and Valby is obviously inherently talented like Tuohy.

I haven't heard anything definitive about whether she was injured and, if so, how long. I do know she hasn't raced since cross country. Not knowing what type of shape she is in makes it difficult to assess her possibilities. I do know that when she ran a 15:03 at sound running she was disappointed. That makes me think that if she is in good shape, a 14:50 or better isn't out of the question. Also, given her face plant at NCAA outdoor championship last year, I would be surprised to see her run unless she thinks she has some chance of making the team. Importantly, all these questions will be answered soon.

Tuohy is doubtful for the Olympic Trials after a hamstring injury derailed her winter and spring training. Her agent, Ray Flynn, confirmed to Runner’s World on May 24 that although she’s back to training now, she is unlikely to be ready in time for the Trials.
I am only speculating — so you may indeed be correct — however given the article above, I imagine her team would feel it’s more beneficial for her to gain Trials experience than waiting to debut only when she is in peak form.

Yes, we were aware of that article (it was noted earlier in this thread).
After that article came out, our good source “Tuffy” (who is nearly ALWAYS correct on all things NC State and Tuohy), let us know that Tuohy WILL in fact be competing at the Olympic Trials (and she shows on the entries list now as well).
Post #48 on this thread from one week ago, "Tuffy", the "insider" at NC State, posted, "She will not be racing the trials. She is nowhere near ready right now." Runner's World seemed to confirm it.
"astro" has posted endlessly about Valby's incredible ability to recover from injuries, just today posting that she "has shown an (sic) seemingly unnatural ability to recover from injury that even her competitors have publicly noticed," one of his "red flags."
And now, after a trip to the Nick Bare Performance Nutrition factory in Austin, Tuohy has suddenly "shown a seemingly unnatural ability to recover from injury."
There are no "magic arc trainers," but there ARE "magic pills" and "magic syringes."
I wonder how astro will try to backpedal from another instance of inserting his foot in his mouth?

Tuffy also said something to the effect that she has had a big gain in fitness over the last month

So her first action then is to go to a meet where she could very well be tested? I thought she was avoiding racing to avoid testing? Which is it?
She’s not going to do her pro debut in a sub-par performance.
She has been injured for 6 months and has not raced at all. Expecting her to run 14:50 would be a stretch.
She is likely running the Trials for the experience, not as a realistic shot at the team.
She already ran the 2022 and 2023 Usatf meets. Not sure how much more learning she would need.
On the other hand, Touhy is old school and feels responsibility to show up at an important meet. I would assume, however, that she believes she can be competitive.
On a similar note, I would not be surprised if Touhy became a regular participant in USA cross country, sort of a ladies side Chris Derrick.

Yeah it is pretty definitively reported she was out with hamstring injury. That was known on this board long before the article came out quoting her Agent.
Personally I hope she is not just running for the experience but in shape to contend for the team . Who knows though, a year is a long time without a track race. Glad she is able to get back in it.
