No boys teams in the top 10 and one close to it. Last year, Ventura was the only boys team in the top 10 in these preseason rankings and they imploded at the end. San Clemente and Dana Hills ended up pulling it off though, placing in the top 10 at nationals. These 2 teams had preseason rankings of 21st and 19th (with transfer Jayden Hernandez included). Also, it’s worth noting that Great Oak is the only nationally-ranked CA boys team that’s senior-heavy, so we can expect next year to be a better year for California teams. And, along the way, some unknown CA team could surprise people. In 2018, there was a team that wasn’t ranked anywhere nationally in the preseason and then they ended up taking 6th at NXN.

Teams 1-5 are separated by 29 points in the scoring system so to me I believe those top 5 teams will probably be the ones who will be competing for NXN and all have a fair argument to believe they are the best team in the state. Preseason rankings are always strange as every year guys come out of nowhere or some team will pick up a transfer but I feel this gives a good idea on what is likely to come but I am excited to see how similar these rankings are when the season is done.

As much as Jesuit is getting glazed in this thread, they do feel like the biggest wildcard here. Their range feels like anywhere between winning 1st in the merge or just being a fringe podium team in their division

Matilda Torres is the only D3 team in this list. Definitely a team to watch. This school opened up only a few years ago and they are on the rise. They have been led by underclassmen for the last couple of years.
Dana Hills has been to NXN many times, but they have some rebuilding to do after returning only Noonan and Hunter. They will need to find 3 guys to fill in, though they do have some younger kids coming up.

This is all good entertainment while we all wait for a race to determine who worked hard in the summer and who is healthy when the season starts. Just throwing darts in the dark for now but if a stellar performance in cross 2023 didn't convert to a successful track season that gives a hint if there will be a bump in performance cross 2024. Woodbridge will be the first real indication followed by Clovis. The real discussions will start after Clovis which will thin out the "speed" teams and those that can handle Woodward Park.
