I think this year was a good setup for what to expect going into next year for the double. Hopefully he stays injury free and makes further progress in both events.
Question, do world champs get a bye into the Olympics or do they have to compete in the trials like everyone else?
Random out-of-comp testing didn't start until 1989. "She passed competition tests" is meaningless, only a total idiot will test positive at a meet. IAAF/World Athletics set the sport back 50 years by not wiping the slate clean in 1989, we should have gotten to celebrate 21.41 and 10.54 as WRs
SMH......Still can't prove she used any illegal performance enhancing drugs. There were plenty of performances from the 80's and 90's that are still in the top ten all-time performances to this day.
35 years later, we still have folks talking s***.
Prove it and have World Athletics take all her performances down
That's not how it works. World Athletics only changes results going back 10 years. So proving that so many people in the 1980's were taking drugs wouldn't change the records.
Erriyon Knighton runs a wind legal 19.49 200m which is a new world U20 record and fourth-fastest in world history.Website: http://flosports.link/3p20lTjSubsc...
The records that I want most to go down are Marita Koch's 47.60 & Jarmila Kratochvílova's 1:53.28. Those are still Eastern Block records and I consider them to be tainted by state-sponsored doping.
SML has a legitimate shot at the 400 but I'm not sure that her heart is in it. I see nobody that has a shot at the 800 anytime soon.
I've always thought the women are closer to FloJo's records than to the 400 and 800 records.
Those 400 and 800 records are so out there, I really don't see them being broken anytime soon.
I don't think the 400 and 800 records are clean/legit, but I dont think the 800 is close to unbreakable. The 800 record feels softer than the women's 1500m record, 5k, 200, 100, 400m hurdles, you name it. The 800 to me is the one of the softest on the women's side. Yeah maybe Athing would have the clean world record at 1:55.0, but I think we just haven't had a few "next level" pure 800m runners on the womens side like we have had with Rudisha/Kipketer/Cruz on the mens side. I could see Mu getting into the high 1:53s in the next couple years. At some point there will be a renaissance in the women's 800m like we've had in recent years with the 400m hurdles, womens 15, marathon, and we'll see a handful of women in the 1:54 range, possibly lower.
The 400m feels the most way out there. Like WAY out there. I don't know if a woman can run within 0.7 of it clean. I don't know how much that takes away from the sport though. The women's 400m was awesome this year, one of the best events to follow through the rounds with contenders from all over the world. Besides, it's kind of fun having a few records that feel completely unachievable.
Gonna be hard for Bednarek to medal in the 200m in the future with Tebogo and Knighton continuing to improve. Very accomplished career, but I wonder what he can do in a 400m, he might be too big and solid for it though.
I might take Lyles Knighton Tebogo and Kenny B to win a 4x4 over the top 4 from the 400

Nobody gets a bye into the Olympics
Next year will be much harder to make that 100m team for Lyles imo. He clearly timed his peak for worlds and not USA’s. I think more of the 100meter specialists will be on top of their game in an Olympic year.
I gotta say I love Tara Davis-Woodhall's & Anna Hall's personalities. Both of the genuinely glow and look like their having a great time while competing.
They are actually very different. Anna Hall is an upbeat person who always stays positive. Good day, bad day, average day, doesn't matter. That's why she always looks happy.
Tara Davis-Woodhall is an extremely emotional person. When she is happy, she is really happy, and when she is down in the dumps she is really down in the dumps. I seen her in person at a lot of track meets and her mood is way up or way down depending on how things are going for her that day. She is definitely not always having a great time while competing.

I dont think the 800 is close to unbreakable. The 800 record feels softer than the women's 1500m record, 5k, 200, 100, 400m hurdles, you name it. The 800 to me is the one of the softest on the women's side.
The women's 800 world record is the longest lasting world record in track and field, men or women.
Here's a tip to help you with your analysis - When a world record lasts longer than literally every other world record, that means it's not soft.

That's one angle. Another angle says the women's 400 record is only about 4 and half seconds slower than the men's, but the women's 800 record is about 12 and a half seconds slower. Twice the distance, nearly three times the gap.

In this case this is a reflection of what has made the record soft. The men's 400m hurdles WR was around for a long time, because there was a lack of talent in the event for a long time. It's now proven to have been soft.

Who is going to break the 800 record? I just don't see anyone that is competing today as capable of doing it.
I was serious about SML having a shot at the 400. I was also serious about being unsure if her heart is really in it. If Kersee would let her compete I think we will see that record go down in the next few years.

Completely different thing. Many of the world's top 400 flat runners, both men and women, never ran the 400 hurdles.
I can't think of even one runner that was good at both the 400 and 1500 who refused to run the 800.

Once testes were taken out of the women's 800, the only woman with even a very small chance at the 800 world record is Athing Mu.
But for Athing Mu to have any kind of shot at all she would have to train extremely hard for several more years. And I don't think she will train that hard.
And even if she did, I still think the most likely scenario is that she wouldn't get to within .5 seconds of the world record.
I am for keeping both javelin and hammer. I am all for making T&F inviting for 180 lbs. plus men (javelin) and 230 lbs. plus men, (hammer).
I just looked up list of U.S. medalists, hammer and javelin. I thought I would see a correlation with decrease in player population of college American football teams. U.S. used to earn medals, hammer when football teams had unlimited rosters but I see no correlation with size of football teams and javelin medals.
The solid explanation for the rest of the world doing well at hammer & javelin and U.S. not doing well, youth participation. How do other nations make hammer and javelin throws safe participation sports for their youth? Oregon & Washington have javelin throw as a standard high school event. I assume both states have throwers throwing on a separate field away from everyone.

Is it better to have Semenaya break the 800 record, or let a super doped up east German chick keep it? I would prefer neither, but probably pick Semenaya.

I don't like either option.
But I guess between those two I would rather have a biological woman with the women's record than a biological male with a women's record.
