conservatives have been against so much that we treasure today that it's hard to even list them all.
Liberals? I mean 'conservatives' try to blame them for crime in the cities when crime in the cities has fallen what - 80% since 1990. Ok, ok, there is 0% chance conservatives will credit libs for that, but it happened on their watch.
What else is there? I guess some peope don't like safe food, social security, medicare, public schools, workplace safety, making slavery illegal, controlling the police...so yeah from their point of view libs are bad. I do get that.
Conservatives have indeed been on the wrong side of history on a massive number of things. 10 or 20x as many more bad things than liberals.
agip is correct about history, but it doesn't mean liberals are always right.
The liberal's job is to make the world a better place. The conservative's job is to make sure the liberals don't go too far too fast.
William F. Buckley, who some consider to be the father of American conservatism, said:
“A conservative is someone who stands athwart history, yelling Stop, at a time when no one is inclined to do so, or to have much patience with those who so urge it.”
Liberals will usually be proven right by history because history is told from the perspective of the modern world that the liberals created. It's just that conservatives don't get much credit for erecting the guard rails along the way.

Good point.
Terrible logic....Crime was through the roof in 1990 and it's bad now...Just because we haven't reached 1990 levels doesn't mean it's not bad now...
That's right. The Blue State Bailout was a powerful piece of legislation. That's why Pelosi did her little dance when it was passed by the house and why everyone has been paying out the nose on inflation. It greatly rewarded state governments that penalized their populations.
joe how come you know so much about energy and so little about anything else? Why is that? are you some sort of idiot savant or just a liar?
Per capita, that bill helped red states more than blue states. Because red states are the poor states and lord knows they need the help.

I completely agree that conservatives are needed in America. They are needed in every society to keep the institutional knowledge, pass on mores, norms, standards, etc. We need that backbone.
And the conservative accomplishment is not tangible...how do you explain exactly the golden goose that is America is the result of generations of norms and rules and standards kept up by conservatives? You can't really. But you CAN touch civil rights and social security. So liberals have an advantage there.
As for guard rails - they are needed. But American conservatives always seem to build them in the wrong places.

An overwhelming and growing majority of Americans say the U.S. is heading in the wrong direction, including nearly 8 in 10 Democrats, according to a new poll th
I’m so puzzled how anyone can support trump after trump incited a riot to overthrow democracy
Repubs have no morals
I’m wondering what you call it when the Biden administration ignores border enforcement and now refuses to even deport immigrants that lose their asylum hearings? Isn’t deliberately not enforcing the democratically enacted laws of the country a threat to democracy?
yeah CA is so crowded and popular that no one wants to live there anymore.
I bet the state budget is in massive deficit like Illinois!
Oh wait the state has a $100 billion surplus! My bad! I made a mistake there!
The California state budget is in horrible shape. They have about $2 trillion in unfunded liabilities. Their 2021 surplus (btw every state had a surplus in 2021, big whup) was fueled by their capital gains tax on a great year for stocks. In 2022, they won't get those revenues, plus MANY of those wealthy taxpayers moved out.
Newsome even admitted all this a few weeks ago. I'll post the link if I find it.
Newsome on tax revenues. “California’s tax revenues are famously volatile, and this measure would make our state’s finances more unstable — all so that special interests can benefit,” the Governor said. “Prop. 30 is fiscally irresponsible and puts the profits of a single corporation ahead of the welfare of the entire state.”
Ultimately, the impact of this year’s negative returns and unfunded public pension liabilities affect contributions required to be made by the state government and any local government that partici…
Just because the crime rate was worse in 1990 doesn't mean it's not bad now...your logic escapes me.
Okay, "agip" had made a statement about an ~80% drop since 1990 and I provided some data for people to check. In fact, crime rates have fallen countrywide by about half since 1990, not 80%.
But agip's point was specifically about the cities, not the whole country, and I supplied one datum about my city: In 2021, a "bad" year, homicides in absolute numbers (among a somewhat larger population) were 22% of what they'd been in 1990. Still too many? Sure, but that wasn't his point. The *fact* is that crime rates in Dem-run NYC have fallen significantly since 1990.
[Full disclosure: As I've mentioned many times on this board, I've been a voter for 50+ years and have never--not once--cast a ballot on the Democratic line. For any office, in any election.]

Anybody that analyzes data for a living knows you look at and react to significant trends in the data. You don’t wait for things to actually get worse before taking corrective action. Especially in regard to something that involves actual human lives being lost.
The 32 years between 1990 and now constitute a significant data set when evaluating almost anything. That’s like 5 different administrations that might have different policies in regard to crime. $hit…we look at a smaller set of data in analyzing climate change! This is nothing but wishful thinking.
Fred Wellman @FPWellman Don't fcking dare say you support our military, intelligence and law enforcement personnel then defend an ex-President who directly threatened their lives by treating our top secrets like fan mail to be tossed in boxes and a closet. How many lives did he put in danger?

Not sure you know what "disclosure" means.
What's the point in constantly saying this? Why not just tell us who you voted for? You say that as if it makes you objective but you obviously don't vote Republican and still largely are on the liberal/Democrat team so you are probably just voting for a left-leaning third party.
Crime was through the roof in 1990 and it's bad now...Just because we haven't reached 1990 levels doesn't mean it's not bad now...
I don't think anyone is saying that it's not bad now!
But the link that someone provided shows that, across the country, crime rates have dropped by half since 1990. That's progress in the right direction.
FWIW in 1990 Republicans had been in the White House for about ten years.

Just a quick glance shows most violent crime trending up over the last few years.
Again, interesting. Link? A current one would be a real help!
...Because the previously linked stats are just through 2019. Those show a downward trend, but we all know a lot changed in the last Trump year and first Biden year.

it's true that crime started rising in the trump years and has continued to rise in the biden years.
The *fact* is that crime rates in Dem-run NYC have fallen significantly since 1990.
Except of course it was run by moderate Republicans/Independents from 1994 to 2018... The latter being a moderate Democrat nationally, but with views on crime (like Clinton), that would get him kicked out of the party today

How do you go from that article to saying that Newsom said the CA budget is in horrible shape?
Fuzzy memory and exaggeration. But it sure doesn't sound like he thinks it's in great shape. It's kind of implied that if these record surpluses would continue, they wouldn't be trying to raise taxes would they?
