In the bigger context of Canadian Track and Field, this has severely damaged our sport. It’s another black mark on the track and field community, after the Ottawa scandal a year ago.
It will take a long time for the reputation of the University of Guelph and Athletics Canada to recover.
But the biggest thing is the amount of people who have been affected by Dave’s actions and his coverup:
*U of G’s entire XC/track team, student-athletes, who just want to go to school and compete in their sport . They now have to deal with the unknown of what will happen to their program and what other coaches may be fired as the school investigate further.
*The Guelph hub AC athletes (national and hopeful Olympians) who have been left to find different coaches and training groups, especially coming into an Olympic year, the loss of funding to their hub which also could impact how SR club + university coaches get paid.
*The alleged victim who came forward and had to re-live what happened to her.
And finally, the impact all of this will have on Dave’s immediate family, Both financially, and emotionally.
One coach with an immense amount of power blows it all up.
