Yes, the effort and physiology at mile 22 of the marathon race is very different from the final mile of a hammered 8 mile tempo run. At that point in the marathon your muscles are on a very fine edge of cramping up usually because they are not getting enough fuel (from glycogen) anymore and your fat isn't helping you fast enough. At the end of an 8 mile tempo it is usually lactate acid that is starting to make you "hurt."
800m person: I don't think your 30k races should present the problem of running out of glycogen like you would in a marathon (unless it is taking you over 3 hours).
I didn't mean to say that MP was very very close to LT pace. I'll throw some examples out there: Maybe your MP pace is 5:25/mile....so your LT might be around 5:10-5:05/mile which is close enough so that if you were having a bad day on an 8 mile tempo run it might be closer to MP then your true LT.
