I don’t know why some people have such a problem with athletes setting records in less often run events. Is it because you can’t easily contextualize how strong the performance is? As a running-stats geek I absolutely love them, they pique my imagination.
I’m 100% sure Hull would acknowledge there are women who could run faster than 5:19.70 (Kipyegon 5:14?) and I doubt she cares.
It’s not that big a deal, but I find it a little annoying. It’s a wr, but at the same time there are several other women running right now that would shatter it tomorrow if they tried. It hits differently than Jakob’s 2 mile run last year. You knew that he and that mark were in fact a “real” all time effort, even though it’s not even considered a wr. I’m not against Hull, just think if she’s feeling super fast, just go for a mark in a frequented event. At worst, she set another area record.
I definitely felt Paris´s race all week in the legs. So today the goal was just to be strong, even if my legs were very heavy. I ran at a different pace and level of fatigue I have never been before. It was incredible, when I was on my own in the last lap, everyone was cheering for me. The wavelights also helped, I was just looking at the lights hoping that they don´t catch me. It is amazing to be called a world record holder now. The last 200m were a long way, I didn´t want to let down the spectators. I ran hard for this record, I worked extremely hard for this too. There are for sure some women who can run that 5:19, but for now I have my place in the history books. I am running so fast now, because I have been healthy for four years and have a really strong body now.

I do wish we got the real broadcast in the US and not the dumbed down NBC version. The NBC commentary is just so humorless and feels like forced enthusiasm. It's also insulting how they have to 'explain everything' and be hyper-focused on the American athletes (I say this as a proud American). The Brits have the knowledge, enthusiasm and genuine love for the sport. Case in point: (chef's kiss emoji)
