WWS boys sneak ahead of Ignatius and win the Lake Park sectional by 3 points. 31 second split on the Tigers 1-5, this team is looking great. Newport with the individual win in 14:51, only guy to break 15. Schrager with another outstanding run today. She has a very good shot at the Detweiler course record next week, she only ran 7 seconds off of 15:53 at Harvey Braus and it looks like she’s peaking at the right time.
The York and Sandburg boys streaks ending that everyone’s been mentioning are also quite notable, but because they got 8th, this will be the first time in 24 years where the WWS girls will not be at State. That program had some NXN teams in the early 2010s, and they were second in the state one year and third in state another. It really is a changing of the guard this weekend.
I give Benet credit they did better than I thought they would
Benet is a possible trophy contender next year. They are returning everyone!!!
Other teams to watch are those from this section:
Hersey (returns all scorers)
Barrington (returns all scorers. 4 sophs scoring)
Palatine (they won this section and also return 3 guys (albeit loses 4) and also adds a really good freshman next year). Someone from JV almost made their top 7 so he could help too.
Plainfield South won’t do as well next year as some people think. They return only 2 constant scorers. Their 3rd returner who sometimes scorers has been consistent. After him it will be an even bigger drop-off. So this year they better win state (I’m sure they will) and make NXN and do as good as possible there

Hard to say. They return about as many as any other of the top 5 or 6 teams. Three guys under 9:30 returning is a pretty good core, three possible all-state including the probable favorite for individual in Viger. If they can find a couple of guys who can get in the 50 or 60 range they could repeat with a score well over 100 like Sandburg did last year.

They return 3 guys under 9:30 for fall 2023? Viger, Maloney and who else?
Boerger (junior) ran a 10:05. He was their #3 sometimes last year but this year he sometimes isn’t scoring. Anyone know why he sat out at sections? Having a solid top 5 is good but having a 6th and 7th helps for displacement and in case someone falls back.
All the other varsity runners are graduating (AFAIK)

Lincoln-Way East is a team to watch out for next year. Had a sophomore in ‘21 who ran 15:47 who is seeming to finally get healthy and start working out with team again, who didn’t even break 20:00 as a freshman. Return 15:57 16:00 16:03 16:27 16:54 16:58 next season aside from him, out of that group last year only 1 had broke 17:00 in ‘21, with the 16:27 seeming to never have even ran before this track season, never even breaking 2:20. If they stay healthy and keep improving this is a podium team.
