Yeah, in the early going I thought he would get caught at about five miles, or maybe hold on until 10k. To lead for 1:44 is a tremendously long time and it was a courageous effort. If you have almost no shot to place high by running a "normal race" and you aren't too concerned about running a personal best, why not take a flyer and see what happens? I bet he'll never regret running this race as he did.
He's a pro athlete. He is concerned about a personal best or at least placing. This isn't the same as a 230 guy leader a race with a bunch of low 220s guys. This was a bad strategy and he should have backed off the pace by 10k when he realized no one was near him.
He's a pro athlete so I assume he took this strategy completely understanding what he was doing. In your version, he sits in the pack, and slowly fades around 10k when the guy start really racing, and he's a nameless 16th place finisher or something like that.
Today he put his sack on the line, and put his sponsor up front for 1.5 hrs. Had he gotten a little luck, maybe just maaaayyybe he finishes on the podium. In your conventional scenario he has no shot of that.
