He can’t really hide in the reserve for too long with drones and what not tracking 24/7, but he may not be there having already gotten out, possibly out of the country as well. Remember that he had a good two weeks at home to plan everything. All you need is to purchase a prepaid burner phone with a data plan with cash to plan your escape well before her parents even filed a missing person report.
As for if he were an ultra runner, he would indeed have a better chance of escape in terrain unsuitable for jeeps, but the reserve is mostly swamp and unsuitable even for feet (unless he is Jesus), so he’d have to be a triathlete with gator outsmarting skills.
