A reluctance to out friends is exactly what allows the rot to spread. I knew people who ran for AW who told me that Nike made drugs available to them, and, that they knew that some in the AW group had used them. At the time it seemed like hearsay, or, perhaps, given who was telling me this and their state of sobriety while doing so, outright lies. But, now, in hindsight I wish I had pursued it harder. I was not an insider, but, I think that, in the world of drug use, there is no universal mathematikoi. Everybody knows one or two people who are using, but it's not like there are club meetings or something. You know that someone is using because you're close with that person. They're friends with these people. Loyalty, too often, trumps justice. That's why justice doesn't win as often as it should. And I'm somebody that believes that it should win all the time. I guess I'm some kind of extremist....
Anyone who really loves the sport hates doping, hates cheaters and should hate themselves for not seizing the opportunity to do something about it when it presents itself. I do to some extent.
But I'm glad Malmo loves the sport enough to do the right thing. I'm looking forward to him doing so. It might go a long way to erasing some bad karma.
