Those of you who bet money on the Phillies on my prior post are getting your comeuppance. Huh, there is always next year.

Are you serious? The one pitcher that doesn't scare anyone right now is Hamels. Well, Lidge obviously. Come to think of it, Lidge scares half the US. The half rooting for the Phils.
Hamels has been AWFUL in the playoffs.
I thought Phils fans totally trusted Manuel's intuition?
That said, good series. The only game that felt like it couldn't go either way was game 1. All the rest were tough.
Are they still going to play game 7?
It can't be over. It just can't.
OK. NOW it's Eagles time. The Cowboys are coming to town.
Congrats Yankees!! 103 days until pitchers and catchers report.
Last night I was reminded of why I'll never respect American League rules. The DH rule is complete crap. Congrats to New York though, it was a very exciting series.

Disclaimer: I am a lifelong Yankee fan.
I would be fine with eliminating the DH. Hey, our payroll would go down!
Seriously, though, I have a real problem with Matsui as MVP. Don't get me wrong, I love him as a player. He's classy and obviously clutch. But does a guy who barely plays in half the games and only bats when he does play deserve MVP? I'm not sure who it should be if not him. Jeter did hit pretty well. Rivera was his usual solid self. Pettitte won two but wasn't super. Sabathia was better but lost one. I hate Burnett.
Honestly, I wouldn't have been upset if they gave it to Utley.

Agreed. I'm a lifelong Phillies fan. That was a tough loss, especially when you've seen the team play much better than they did the entire series. I wouldn't totally chaulk it up to "brilliant pitching" on the yankees side, but the phillies hit like shit. The yankees played better when it mattered most, so they deserved the win. Congrats, you're high powered offense paid off.
I don't think Matsui should've gotten the MVP. He basically had one big game that mattered. You have to look at the series as a whole. My vote was for Utley or Lee. Utley is an obvious candidate. But look at Lee, brilliant in game 1, dominance was almost unrivaled in world series history, and then not as spectacular in his next showing, but still came away with the win. And on top of that, I believe he was the only pitcher to get a base hit this series!
my thoughts? If philly had the yankees payroll, they could fund two philly teams! put them in each league and they'll play in the world series. Epic.
Pettitte had an important RBI single in game 3 plus beat Hamels and Martinez.
Jeter was solid all the way through and would be my vote for MVP.
I'm OK with Matsui as MVP. Big timely plays.
I don't care for someone on the losing side getting MVP and Utley had chances in Game 6 to do something.
I do think Utley should have been MVP last year. Hamels had one win and one no decision where the team won in the end.
The Yankees took 2 out 3 in Philly so the DH didn't help there.
To me the Pettitte games were the key to this Series.
Going into this you would expect Cole Hamels to beat Pettitte and then you would expect Pedro Martinez to beat Pettitte on short rest.
There's your World Seriers swing right there.
Not sure I totally agree with you on Lee. He pitched one good game. His other rounds were amazing but his game 5 performance wasn't that great. He was lucky to win. If Burnett hadn't sucked (as expected), he wouldn't have won that one.
also, as pointed out, Pettitte had a huge hit.
Not sure how a second Phillies team would beat that Yankees to win the AL :)
I say give it to Jeter. His average in the world series was amazing. And I don't know how many runs he scored but it must've been a lot!
Matsui didn't DH in Philly but he did pinch hit, and had a homer and another hit.
I can see the case for Matsui, though. Who knows if Yankees win without Matsui. If he didn't produce last night and say the Yankees lost the game, it's not necessarily a Yankee win in game 7. Matsui ensured that the Yankees would take it.
Utley deserved a thought but I just can't see someone on the losing team being MVP (I know it's happened before). But you can't be that valuable if your team loses. Even if someone from the winning team helped in a lesser way, that way was more valuable because it contributed to the team winning the series.
