Today was my last hard session before next Wednesday's 5000m. As planned I ran 2 x 1600 + 2 x 1200 + 2 x 800 all with 2 minutes recovery. Times were 4:37, 4:37, 3:25, 3:25, 2:14, 2:10. It was a tough workout to do on my own but I'm really happy with my progress over the last week. There is no way I could have done this session last Friday. This morning I did a little activation session to wake up my sluggish system: 25 minutes easy with a few easy strides towards the end; 8 x :15 at 4:00/mile pace on the treadmill with :45 recoveries; 4 x 50 power skips with skip rope (trying to keep this skipping going now that I'm healthy; find that it really helps me keep light on my toes). Sunday's session will be nice a short: 1200 - 600 - 300 with 2 minutes recovery.
Runner93, as long as I'm only doing two long races close together (and not a whole string of them) I find that it actually helps my performance. I will often run faster in the second race than the first. The first acts like a shock to the system I guess. Before my first track race this year (the 14:06 that I mentioned earlier in this thread) I ran a road 10k five days before. I was coming off a cold and ran poorly in that race but I really think it helped wake up my body for that 5k. I ran easy the day after the 10k, ran the sharpener session that I mentioned in the first paragraph of this post the next day, took two more easy days and then raced the 5k.
