"... Another high-impact development involved Oaks Christian — who we originally pegged as the #6 team in the state — sliding down several spots as its projected top returnee has decided to drop the sport in favor of pickleball. Yes, we are serious. ..."
Imagine being good enough to potentially get an individual NXN qualification and you go to pickleball.
A story like that doesn't surprise me at all. Distance running is not for everybody, in fact only a small percentage of the population actually enjoys it. In my senior year, our 3 best runners had begun to hate running and hate our coach even more. They didn't quit, but they spent the year doing things to be disruptive, cutting every distance run and daring the coach to kick them off the team. I have no idea what the dynamic here is, maybe it is very good but he just decided he enjoyed playing/practicing pickleball more. Either way, the lesson is the same. Being a very good distance runner is very hard and training for it is not enjoyable for a lot of people. Life is short, if you find something you enjoy a lot more, then spend your precious free time on that.

Hector Martinez from Newbury Park ran a sub-15 5k at RunningLane as a junior, had a brief track season afterwards and ended it early, and did not run at all senior year because of too many injuries. I remember seeing in a thread that he really misses running. But he did make contributions to the team by producing music for the them senior year.
Not sure if he will be running in college but if he doesn’t, it isn’t uncommon for the team. People who graduated NPHS in 2019 or earlier ran for like a year or 2 in college and then quit, or just didn’t run in college at all. Even the 2021 grad Simone (who transferred so much) probably ran for like a year in college then quit, and he was as an assistant coach for a high school

Hector moved with is family and had family and medical issues unrelated to running. He actually never graduated Newbury Park , but graduated from another High School because of this situation in.

He didn’t start at Newbury Park either. He went to Oaks Christian freshman year
I think the top guys not on qualifying teams will be: Jason Parra (8:46), Grant Morgenfeld (8:49), Evan Noonan (8:49), Carter Spralding (8:50), Emmanuel Perez (8:50), Andreas Dybdahl (4:08), Aydon Stefanopoulos (8:57), Joshua Bell (8:55), and Broen Holman (9:01). Anthony FastHorse (8:51) will be up there but his team will go to NXN if all goes well, leaving room for other individuals to qualify
Saint Francis’ CCS Matthew Mullane just defeated 8:49 Grant Morganfield by 12 seconds. I researched Mullane and he ran 16:50 at last years state meet at Woodward Park. This past spring the fastest 3200 I found for him was 9:52.
The question is was Morganfield sandbagging or is Mullane going to be contender for NXN.

That should be enough evidence that Morganfield could have run much faster if he wanted. Since he is aiming for NXN, no reason to be running all out in small, early meets.

Yeah early meets are more to see things like…. - Who really stepped up over the summer and is helping out the team - Did a team find a 5th runner - How well the transfers are helping out the team - Did the team that lose all of their varsity find the talent to reload - Did the person who missed the track season come back to full health and fitness
Cool Breeze invitational Today we get to see what Newbury Park has in store in its first year since 2015 without a Sahlman or a Young in the program and without a Brosnan in the coaching staff.
