It's a lot more than half. According to the recent NYT/Sienna poll, only 11% believe "Future of democracy or political polarization" is the most important issue.
I wonder why that is? One party is trying to deal in abstract issues, while the other party is running on tangible issues that affect people's everyday lives. Do you think people are wrong to be more worried about inflation, the economy, and healthcare than they are political polarization? In addition, less than 1% stated that domestic terrorism is an important issue. That tells me that people aren't buying into the January 6th narrative.
It's almost like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs except for politics. People can't worry about the abstract if their everyday needs aren't guaranteed.
In other words: "It's the economy, stupid."
Trying to steal an election is not an abstract issue. I say again, trying to steal an election is not an abstract issue. It's banana republic stuff. We're the United States of America. We're supposed to be far, far above such national dysfunction....right?
Of course a rational, responsible person should put the serious threat of the U.S. becoming anti-democratic far, far above transitory inflation, and just about ANY other issue.
Moreover, the current alternative to the current administration never demonstrated notable national leadership skills. There's ZERO reason to believe that Trump, or any other R would handle inflation better than Biden.
So, because there's bad inflation you're going to sign up for an autocrat? And an autocrat who almost certainly won't handle that problem any better? Idiocy.
My "roughly half" was based on the ~47% of Americans who wanted to sign up for 4 more years of Trump. If the election were held today, I'm guessing that it would be in roughly the same ballpark. That obviously doesn't tell you why roughly half voted against him, but it does at least tell you that roughly half don't see/admit the threat.
I know that silly people will call this naive, but in an allegedly sophisticated, modern country, someone like Trump should have had an approval rating in the single digits. NO ONE should have thought that it was OK for a President to act as he did. And I'm pretty damn confident that the founding fathers would fully agree. They simply must be rolling over in their graves.
I know why you said "roughly half"... just saying, even Among Democrats only 11% agreed the state of democracy is the most important issue currently compared to the other stuff you listed
it's not the economy. It's culture wars. the Rs are really good at making trans people the issue and not things that help people. Rs literally spent 10 years trying to take health insurance away from Americans. Literally. No joke. That was a major goal.
Rs know their policies are deeply unpopular so they divert to trans kids and 'what is a woman' questions. And they will keep doing that because it works for them.
You think Democrats are getting crushed in the polls this year because of trans issues?
I have zero doubt that a significant portion of Biden's disapproval comes from non-Trumpers upset about inflation.
I also have zero doubt that if inflation went to zero tomorrow, ~40-50% of the country would still think that Biden is horrendous and Trump and/or other Rs are preferable. So, yeah, as Agip says, I think that the culture war brainwashing has been very effective.
Slightly more specifically, when you have the transgressions of Trump and a party that still supports him on one side, and the list of arguments on the other side includes (freakin') "transgenderism" anywhere in the top 3...5...10....100(???) of concerns, you've got some seriously dysfunctional thinking going on. And it's REALLY easy to imagine what network most of them got it from.

Is trump on the ballot for midterms? Nope, just a bunch of democrats who are going to take the blunt of the voters frustration with the current administrations poor first 2 years. Biden and his supports can play the blame game all they want, but when you control the White House, congress, and have a 50/50 share of the senate you should expect to take the blame for the issues we are facing. Blaming Putin and Covid isn't an acceptable defense strategy.
Why do you think Stacey Abrams and Ohio dems snubbed Biden when he visited their states? They see him as a detriment to their campaign because of his anemic approval rating.
Keep deflecting to orange man, but he hasn't been in the Oval Office for a while. This will be a pocket book election, not a "domestic terrorists are the biggest threat to democracy" election.

Funny you use the word "deflecting" right before mentioning domestic terrorists but NOT Trump and other officials in expensive suits trying to steal an election. I'm not very worried about domestic terrorists. I am very worried about sore losers destroying our democracy. You want to pretend that the non-Trumpers are only worried about the Proud Boys. No, they recognize the much larger threat, and you want pretend that it doesn't exist.
And for all intents and purposes, Trump IS on the ballot this fall. For starters, a party OK with an attempted election thief being their leader ought to lose races for that reason ALONE.
Moreover, voters of any intellect whatsoever should realize that a vote for an R member of congress this fall is almost certainly a vote for a person who won't hold Trump accountable, and will excuse and enable him should he be re-elected. Voting for an R who you THINK might be better on inflation - or pretty much any other issue - should be thoroughly trumped by the threat to democracy and the rule of law.
Alas, we live in country with far too many unprincipled, illogical, tribal, bitter, and/or selfish people.

I mention domestic terrorists because that's what I've been told we should be worried about: an insurrection by domestic terrorists to overthrow democracy. It's funny when a poll shows that less than 1% care about that. 10% mention political polarization being an issue, but I don't see those as the same issue. You keep trying to tie anyone with a R beside their name to Trump, and it's not going to work.
Why is it illogical for me to vote for someone who aligns better with my own beliefs and convictions? Why would I vote for a liberal or a progressive who shares none of my values? I'd rather get as many R's elected so that if a D wins the 2024 election, at least they're hindered in how much of their progressive nonsense they'll be able to push. And if a R wins the White House in 2024? All the better still.
This is a thread about Joe Biden, so ultimately that's where the focus should be. His poor approval rating is like a black hole and any democrat who gets too close to him gets sucked beyond the point horizon where there is no escape. It's why people in tight races this fall don't want any part of the Biden administration. As bad as Biden is for optics, Kamala is even worse. Newsom has noticed this and is making his play, though I don't see him being any better but the democrat political bench is so shallow he may be their best bet for 2024.
Most of your talking points are better suited for the Jan 6th discussion thread. Lots of trump bashing over there, which is fine since that's what the thread is for. This thread is to discuss the current POTUS, as impotent as he is.
Here's another problem with polling. people repeat back to pollsters what they read on the clickbait media.
In the same NYT story. Says that people are very pessimistic about the economy.
but they themselves? Doing fine, thanks.
Asked about the nation, 58% say the economy is doing "poor"
On their own, only 17% are doing "poor"
Flipped around:
asked about the nation, 10% say the economy is good.
Asked about their own situation, 43% say the are doing good.
Classic. People really don't want to appear idiots, and they really have empathy, and they listen to way too much for-profit media.
Just 10 percent of registered voters say the U.S. economy is “good” or “excellent,” according to a New York Times/Siena College poll — a remarkable degree of pessimism at a time when wages are rising and the unemployment rate is near a 50-year low. But the rapidly rising cost of food, gas and other essentials is wiping out pay increases and eroding living standards.
dot dot dot
But while voters are pessimistic about the overall economy, many say their own finances are still holding up relatively well. Forty-three percent of voters in the Times/Siena survey said their personal financial situation was good or excellent. Even among those who said the national economy was “poor,” a third of voters said they were doing fine personally.
Two New York state men who led a mob that overwhelmed police at the perimeter of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 — then bodysurfed over the top of the crowd at a building entrance and pepper-sprayed officers — were both sentenced Friday to 44 months in prison.
Would be an interesting presidential debate when Trump pulls out little nuggets/skeletons about Gavin passed to him from Kimberly G via Don Jr.
Interesting comment coming from one who repeatedly claims that he/she and the GOP have moved on from Trump and that he (Trump) is no longer relevant.
I give you credit for that observation. But I was merely stating the dynamic of Don Jr./Kimberly having the dirt on Gavin IF TRUMP was running. I hope Trump doesn't run but I would derive amusement at how the media would freak out if he did.

Trumpers are just terrible people and terrible Americans. Read this. This is after pepper spraying police officers. Degenerates. followers of the Republican Party and looking for political violence. This is why trump could end the american experiment.

Text messages obtained by the FBI showed that Mattice and Mault planned for violence on Jan. 6, initially expecting resistance from antifa. They texted family members during the mayhem, and then congratulated each other in the days after the riot, which temporarily halted the certification of the presidential election.
Mattice was pepper-sprayed during this encounter, and the two men briefly retreated to clean up, prosecutors said. During this time, Mattice texted his fiancee to say, “me and james literally just got everyone to push, I fought off like 4 or 5 cops and we stand … victorious,” according to court records. His fiancee, Ashley Choate, replied, “omg babe glad you’re having fun and are okay.”
I can say that I am fine financially as I am fiscally responsible and have taken action ever since in began earning income to hedge myself against financial downturn. I can simultaneously say that I think that the economy of the country is not headed in the right direction and that inflation is impacting me in a negative way. I don't see those two things as being opposed to one another. My personal financial practices have nothing to do with the way the government handles their finances, unfortunately.

You call us terrible because we don't care about some lame protests at the Capitol and many Dems are okay with allowing babies who survive botched abortions die. That is infanticide, Agip. About as terrible as it comes. You okay with that?
