I thought Armstrong ran about 2:44?
Lynn Swann ran his with a T.V. receiver pack on, and reported to the hosts live while running. Will Ferrel did his in disguise at first and they lined him up with the elites for protection.
I ran 2:40 on my 40th, and said eat that! to my cyclist friends who constantly told me what a superior athlete Armstrong was to runners. Oh, he (Lance) was around 35 or so.

Need to add Jenson Button (F1 driver) 2:52:30 in the 2015 London Marathon.
One of the fastest times from someone currently active at the top level of a non running sport as opposed to someone that switched sports and were able to focus specifically on the marathon.
Must be the best time for a driver in F1 or any other top level motorsport competition.
No Dana Carvey? He's mentioned in other lists. Is that because it isn't verifiable?
If no Dana Carvey, remove the 3:11:xx and 3:16:xx marathoners in the list above.

All of the runners listed have verifiable times from a running or results website. None of the times were taken from wikipedia or an interview of the person with that being the source. I tried to get the results from the actual races website/results page or marathongyuide.com. I personally verified (to my satisfaction) that the times listed are correct.
I put Clarence Thomas' time on only because the Marine Corps Marathon put it up on their website. I made the assumption, and I could be wrong, that they acepted it as correct and had a basis for that. I did make an effort to locate the time on a results page, but could not find it.
As to Dana Carvey, I left him off only because I could not verify the time or that he even ran another marathon again. I have looked for the marathon and as I recall it may not exist any more. The race result predates times/results on marathonguide.com and so its not there. I looked for interviews with Carvey where he may have made this claim and could not find that either. I checked his website just to see if that was in a bio section and could not find it there either.
I really can't figure out WHERE this rumor started that he ran that time. I am not saying he did not, I just don't know and can't find a legit source to prove he did. I can not even find anything where HE SAYS HE DID.
I think some time ago I may even have started a thread asking if anyone knew of or had proof Carvey ran that time and did not get anywhere. It seems possible he could have, I just made an effort when I put this list together to make sure it was accurate and only wanted to include verifiable times. For example, I read in a number of places about Alan Page's (NFL PLayer/MN Supreme Court Justice) time but kept him off early lists until someone located a link to a credible source and then I added him.
If anyone has a link/source to prove the Dana Carvey time I would be intersted in it.

For whatever it is worth, here the "criteria" / factors I came up with to select names:
1) I looked for people who would be well known to a large percentage of general population. I tried to avoid "C" level celebrities who I thought would be forgotten when their "15 minutes" was up;
2) I excluded athletes who were primarily "runners" (other than world and American record holders). I made a couple of exceptions for interesting times like the fastest marathon leg of the HI Ironman;
3) I was looking for "benchmark times" that people could compare themselves to. That means I included Boston Qualifying times and historical Boston Qualifying times as well as current "corral" qualifying times for large races like Chicago. I thought qualifying for Boston, or getting into a specific corral at Chicago were legit goals people might have;
4) I excluded "gimmick" times, like "fastest person to juggle" while running a marathon. I did include fastest treadmill time and babystroller, and that's where the line was drawn. I wanted the times to be things runners could compare themselves to and since many have run on treadmills or been in a race with a baby stroller pusher I thought that was worthy to include;
5) I looked for times that a casual runner could compare him/herself to, which means I looked for times from the fastest to much slower times. I was looking for a list that from fast to slow a runner could have someone/some benchmark time to have as a goal to beat;
6) Accuracy was important. The time had be to verifiable in a race result list and not just posted by someone on an internet page. I excluded names if I could not find them on a results page and if the only proof was the person saying they did it I excluded that as well.
I started putting the list together after I heard lots of people asking friends who had run a marathon, "did you beat Oprah?" and even Sean Combs made a comment about wanting to beat Oprah.
This was my basic thought process and yes I may have too much time on my hands.

Great list. And I love that you have Paul Ryan's claimed time, and then his actual time. So funny.
Never mind Ryan
Clarence's time is also claimed until we see it in official results list.
He put it in his autobio, but got to 3:11 with under a year running experience? Ok, let's see the official results even if the course was a bit short.
Where's the love?
You overlooked a big one:
x:xx:xx - John Kerry's Boston Marathon claim 1970s or 1980s

All of the results listed above can be found in the actual results - with one exception - Clarence Thomas. In some earlier versions of the list I did not include him for that very reason. However I added him after his name was found on the Marine Corp Marathon's website:
http://www.marinemarathon.com/about/famous-finishersThat seemed good enough "verification" to get on this list. I verified every other name on the results at marathonguide.com or the race's website itself. None of the times are based on just a person saying they ran a time.
There are some celebrity times I could not verify so I left them off.
The world record / fastest time by a human is not correct either now.
Maybe the course record for each of the 6 majors would be an interesting addition?
I realized that as soon as I posted. Whoops...
Another update:
Scratch this:
2:40:04 - Mark Allen, Fastest ever marathon split at Ironman Hawaii 1989
Replace with this:
2:39:45 - Patrick Lange, Fastest ever marathon split at Ironman Hawaii 2016
Not you're fault, but interesting to note.
1) The marathon's 1980 in MCM link you posted. Your list, you have 1979.
2) They removed the "unofficial time" next to his time. Why? Web archives shows it as unofficial on their site in the past.
3) No one can find old marathon results from these old races. Were they even published? We can't even find Boston marathon results from the 1970s.
