Just last Friday I had a great last track session and was feeling rock-solid, but over the weekend started feeling some tightness in my left hip that progressed quickly to pain in the following days. The team doctors assessed me Wednesday and determined that I should get an MRI, which came back clear.
Unfortunately, by the time I had enough information to make a call, it was past the deadline to sub in an alternate.
So trying to make sense of the timeline here… she’s hurt Friday, alternate is called Monday and arrives to Paris on Wednesday. O’Keeffe has a MRI Wednesday that shows no damage, so USATF can’t stop her from running. Fine.
But then saying “by the time I had enough info to make a call, it was too late for the alternate” doesn’t really ring true. She didn’t get any news that would make her less likely to run, it sounds like she was holding our hope she would feel better until it was too late. That’s her right as the trials winner, but I think that’s weak and insincere and I hope she reconsiders the team around her who out her in this position.
