Not a terrible prediction but obviously didn’t pan out. Didn’t take into account Gabelman having dead legs after an epic 800 split followed up by winning the 1600m. Not a lot of gas left in the tank
I saw the race (3200). They literally took the kick out of him. These guys are no joke!
Indeed. Given the benefit of hindsight, should Gabelman have tried the 800/1600m double instead of 3200?
No. It wouldn't matter. In D1 you have to pick ONE event you want to win. It's too hard to compete with fresh guys in your 2nd event. It's just the nature of D1.

I mean you don’t necessarily have to pick 1 distance event to focus on, Connor Ackley won both the 16 and 32 last year. I don’t fault Gabelman for trying the double he did, he’s a special runner and state champion, just didn’t quite have the tank that Ackley had. Another part of this is that Westerville North as a team were in contention for the title, which was also likely a factor in Gabelman doubling.
4 of the top 6 in the 3200 were from Region 3 (Pickerington). Remember... Weston Day nearly beat Sam Richuiiti last week at Regionals for the last qualifying spot in the region. It's crazy to think the state champ barely qualified.

2023: 5th, 9:10.71 (ran a 9:09.34 at the regional meet to qualify)
2024: 6th, 9:09.96
He always showed up in big meets. That's what I'll remember about him. Wayne Invite? Who really cares. Tiffin XC? No big deal. Regionals & State? He's gonna go.
