Vos qualified for state. The qualifying standard was 9:22.37 so his time of 9:20 made it by 2 seconds, which is likely why he wasn't "leaning" at the line. He ran a smart race and accomplished what he set out to do.
On this page, it says “State Qualifier” next to Sutter, Fries, and Stuwe, but not next to Vos or Hage. Which doesn’t make any sense because it says that 9:22.37 is the time qual according to the link that you posted
I wouldn't rely on what it says within the timing companies results. The times are correct but how they are calibrated to the qualifying standards for every race/event may not be. For example the timing companies may be timing an A, AA, and AAA Section race all in the same day, but each class has different qualifying standards for each race/event. The link to the MSHSL website with the qualifying standards is official. I see Milesplit has already listed all 5 runners as qualifiers on their site

That's why I was confused, strange. Very glad he qualified!

Boys had SIX State Qualifiers. Kissel & Weber went 1/2 in 4:15.xx, just ahead of Scott.
Girls were Golomb just ahead of Osanai in 4:56 for each. Golomb just off of her 4:55 PR. Osanai’s first time sub-5. Gullickson in third, just missing sub-5 @ 5:00.35. (But a PR for her.) All three qualified.
Vos just missed the qualifier and didn't look like he leaned much at the end.

Hopkins' Henry Risser and Sydney Drevlow ran 800s today that added up to 4:02.37. Has any Minnesota high school ever had a boy/girl pair get anywhere close to that?
I will predict that both Scott and Mechura will not win the 1600m. These guys are endurance beasts, but don’t have the raw speed. Not sure yet, but I predict someone moving up from the 800m will win. Like Bryce from Lakeville North last year kicking down Brecker.
Alright. An obvious option would be Sanvik from Osseo who is running very fast 800s this winter.
The issue I see with that - Mechura beat him in every race last fall, and the idea Mechura doesn't have raw speed might not be right (what was his NXR pace?) I also think he ran around a :50 4 x 400 anchor leg at True Team Sections last year after breaking the 1600 Section record.
I think it's more likely that Mechura qualifies for the 800, 1600 and 3200 for State, than anyone beats him for the 1600 title.
Others to consider? Sutter, a number of guys from Minnetonka, Moundsview and Wayzata, and Salas (STMA) / Santiago (Blaine) / Williams (WBL).
A lot of the early season runners predicted to compete for the Class 3A title still seem to be the favorites. Mechura looks to be the heavy favorite in the 3200 with Scott, Sutter, and maybe Weber pushing him. A couple younger guys in Haerter, Stuwe, and Fries have had great years with huge PR's but they are likely a year away from competing for a title.
In the 1600 it's a little more wide open and could be a much more strategic race. Where you're positioned could play a big factor. With 24 runners all going at once it should be an interesting race to the finish. I still have Mechura, Scott, and Sutter as my favorites, but it wouldn't surprise me if a name like Kissel, Weber, Hootie, Just, or Sanvik could pull the upset. Either way it should be very entertaining!
Got my tickets for State both on my phone and on paper (not taking any chances). I live just over 50 miles from STMA. Leaving home plenty early, planning to be there by 8 am (when the gate opens). I’ve learned to eat big before I leave or along the way—there’s no real “food” available at the concession window in the morning, just snacks. Maybe they will have some of the food trucks open earlier this year, but I wouldn’t count on that. The weather forecast looks good for all three days.
