So essentially what we are saying is that for 3.5 years from Grandma's to the Olympic Trials - you have shown no "potential" to be anything other than very very good... running in the 2:40s and mid 2:30s... You are not able to run and beat the best of the best... You are not in their tier or league. And you're doing this in your Mid-30s... Now I'm sure honest effort rule in play - you trained and competed to do your "BEST" and all that was was 2:40s-mid 2:30s...
Suddenly you wake up one year and re-emerge as a completely different person - You suddenly Run at a level faster than all of those that last year you couldn't beat, and the greatest contemporaries of all time... And you aren't doing this on the "come-up".... You're not fresh off your All-American Years, or years of running on the track circuit or competing in Europe. Nope - you weren't at a Camp or a Distance group training for years. Tack on that a job and having children.
Hmmm.... When you can't out perform others for years, your body doesn't just wake up out of a funk and say "I'm 23 Again!" But, I guess that's just me.... You're body naturally doesn't suddenly learn to do something at tier or level that is far beyond what it was with six months of work. That's just stupidity or ignoring the facts. ESPECIALLY when you are 37.
But, sure.... Keep Believing! It's a great Story!
