Now that the video is up, we can see that Grijalva was easily able to outpace Hunter when it came time to kick, while Hunter wasn't able to speed up that much, which indicates that the guy above was right that Hunter's aerobic ability needs work. Nevertheless, I contend that coming back from injury, Hunter is probably very happy to be in this kind of shape in November, and he is on target to break 13:10 next year, if healthy. I'm assuming that he'll be in sub-7:40 shape again, and hence, sub-13:10 shape.
I would say that 5:15/2:30 is notably picking it up, but I don't expect Hunter to be any closer to Luis in a 5000m right now. It was a good result from both of them, but Luis is probably 13:10 shape and Drew 13:15-13:20. Whether Luis gets people to pull him to his current fitness this weekend I'm not convinced, though.
Oh wait, I forgot I'm supposed to sh!t on them for no reason.
It is a matter of what you consider picking it up. They were running like 62s and then he ran the last lap in like 59. That is picking it up. But 59s isn't exactly a big kick for a guy running 7:44 and you don't go I wonder how much faster he would have been with even pacing like you would do if he say closed in 55s.
I am pretty confidant that he won the race in 7:45 we we all be happy with how he has progressed from the time trials earlier in the summer and be talking about how is getting back in shape to run a 13:10 or so. The fact that someone else showed up who could run the last lap 2s faster doesn't really change that. I have no clue where either of them are in their training cycles but this is a solid result for both of them.
It will be fun to see how that 5k turns out.
