Boys Regional Rankings - 9/21/2023By Doug Binder, DyeStat EditorEvery team must face a downturn sometime, right? Great Oak has been flying high for a decade in California, and nationally, and the boys team won the CIF Divisio...
I think it would be soooo difficult to be "suddenly famous" - much more than other State champions - with that viral video with 54 s closing lap (* that was the same final lap of Jakub Ingebretson's 1500m that week. you know. the world leader) If he just has a very chill year as a senior, then eases into college - I'm okay with it. I don't think there should be any criticism! He's clearly talented & he has good coaches. How many people really make it the Olympics anyways?! Think long term! Having to put your mind around that (viral video) at age 16 or 17, ugh. Everyone knows who he is and is probably pointing him out at meets. yuck.
You know how kids are (or even adults) on social media; he's probably had to deal with so many random & weird comments, too. maybe this one? LoL.
He could also be coming back from injury. Or is he just saving himself for the state meet? Who knows.
They don’t have Borger because they don’t have him. He’s hurt and in a boot. It’s not like he was out for the ACT or something. Also, Svienty for Hersey didn’t race today. Hersey likely takes the win with him in it. Assuming he is just didn’t race and isn’t hurt. Otherwise it’s a moot point. Just like Borger.
Maloney was leading the race until 2.25 miles - ended up getting caught by Viger and a few others but still finished 4th, just 6 seconds behind Viger, absolutely stellar race for him. Reminds me a lot of Bandukwala’s ascent last year - shows he can stay in the top group all throughout his junior year, slowly gets closer to the #1 nationally ranked senior runner on his trophy contender team all year long, has a big race where he leads for most of it until being caught towards the end (was WSC Silver for Bandukwala last year). Will Maloney complete the trajectory and end up winning the state championship? I certainly wouldn’t count him out.
He is a phenomenal runner and he will continue to be. He is running great times in a state and graduating class that illinois may never see talent of that volume again. As a state we are proud of him and i guarantee he will continue to make us proud for the rest of his high school career.
I know, Barrington girls took that race by storm (word play, do you see what I did?), they really put their team together for 2nd place. Maybe they moved some frosh-soph runners up this week. One of their ninth graders had a phenomenal race for 11th place in the girl's varsity.
Edit: Scout Storms' sister, Georgia Storms, is in 8th grade this year. So, next year they will both be on Barrington's girls team, if Georgia decides to do cross country.
