KT set four ncaa records that go back almost 15 years and already won two ncaa titles this season. If people refuse to acknowledge the differences between distance and sprinting, so be it.
If you look at who’s won in the past regardless of event, there’s a pretty clear formula for how to win: it’s championships + records + world class marks. If a distance runner does that then they can win.
We’ve gone over this. The Bowerman is not a participation award. It is awarded to the best track athlete. Katelyn shouldn’t win it just because college distance runners aren’t as competitive on the world stage. I doubt she’d want to earn a consolation prize. And I don’t think she really cares either way; the future is bright with her. Winning the Bowerman or not will not impact her in any way. She’s a star in the making.
Maybe if Tuohy could use her special super shoes to run faster than Bowerman winner Jenny Barringer did in the 1500 and 5000 she might have a better chance?
it's interesting that an award named for a distance coaching legend doesn't respect the differences in sprints and distance running. Wilson is kind of a generational talent, so it's tough to argue against her either way, but if a sprinter is winning this award for something like 15 years in a row, they are clearly not balancing the requirements of the different events to put everybody on an even playing field.
We have and I make what I feel is a perfectly valid point, that distance running and sprinting are different, with different rates of development and different competitive realities. And that by an historical measure KT is having a more remarkable season. So I feel she should win it. But if she doesn't, oh well.
Given that only performaces in NCAA event during Indoor and Outdoor season are to be considered, to some degree degree of competitiveness on world stage is speculative.
It seems akin to the Heisman award which hardly goes to the player who can do the best at the pro level. But I digress. if both Tuohy and Wilson win their double (much less likely for Tuohy) I would only disagree with the result for the Bowerman if someone else won.
Once again, "best" (btw t&f athlete) is kind of in the eyes of the beholder.

Okay, for an exercise in theory, let’s see:
Tuohy =
TITLES
2 Indoor Championship Titles
(Let’s just say 2 MORE Outdoor Championship Titles)
{so that’d be 4 total}
RECORDS
NCAA
Indoor 1500 (enroute to her mile record)
Indoor Mile
Indoor 3000
Outdoor 5000
So that’s 4 championships (again, I’m just going with the outdoor win scenarios)
4 records
{so that’d be 8 total “points”}
WORLD RANKINGS
Tuohy is currently ranked #25 in the World in the 5000m. (3rd USA by the way)

Jakob and the East Africans disprove your theory that distance runners can't be competitive on a global level from ages 18-23. Galen Rupp, Jenny Barringer, Mary Cain and Cole Hocker disproved it too. Hobbs Kessler might be next.

What's speculative about Britton Wilson breaking the American record in the indoor 400? Or having the best times in the world this year in both the 400 and 400 hurdles?
a more complete post for you would include those but I guess you just prefer snippy remarks.
currently 8/18 world ranking in the 2 events (still not real sure if this should impact Bowerman as most of her 400h marks were from 2022 but maybe she will retain that ranking after 4 more races coming up.
1 NCAA Indoor title (plus a relay with 3 other fast runners)
probably 2 NCAA Outdoor titles (plus likely a relay with 3 other fast runners)

A sprinter hasn't won the award 15 years in a row. Look at the winners list - - it's a good mix of flat sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers of all kinds, 800 runners, distance runners, and even a decathlete. The only disciplines not represented are throwers and pole vaulters. They might have a legitimate gripe here. Distance runners don't.

"To some degree" Has she competed this year against Bol for example?
For me if a sprinter wins it it will commemorate the best sprinting season until...another sprinter does the equivalent next season and the next and the next. There are high school sprinters that run world class times almost every year. Meanwhile even without the virtually impossible 1500/5000 double (another indication of how sprinting and distance running materially differ), what KT has already done may not be duplicated for a generation.
You make a strong case for Wilson. The best season ever for a NCAA sprinter is far more impressive than the best season for a distance runner since there have been so many world class sprinters in the NCAA. And, she has destroyed the 400 meter indoor and outdoor records.
High school girls have run faster than KT in the 1500 meters. A high school girl has never come close to 49.13. So your argument there doesn’t hold water.
And KT still has a ways to go to match Simpson’s 2009 season when she ran 3:59 and 15:01.
This isn’t a knock on KT. She has had an amazing season and would be a deserving winner. But so would Wilson. And Alfred and Moore. As long as they all take care of business at NCAAs. They’ve all had incredible seasons
But it’s crazy to dismiss the others simply because they had the greatest sprint or jumping season in NCAA history.
I can't believe you're still whining about this. It's not Britton Wilson's fault that the college-age distance runners who would be good enough to win the Bowerman go pro instead of running in the NCAA (Jakob, Kiplimo, etc). Why should Wilson be penalized for that?
The Bowerman is not a sympathy award. It's the award for the athlete who performed at the highest level of the sport. The woman who has performed at the highest level in the NCAA this year is Britton Wilson, not Tuohy. Get over it already!
It is atually for the "most outstanding athlete" which is a little vague to me. "Most outstanding" likely means different things to different people. Wins? Records? World standing?
Note above I expect Wilson to win and be a deserving winner.
I do think the distance double in 90 minutes is harder than the 400/400h double in 90 minutes. 30 minutes like at regional and Nationals brings them closer in terms of difficulty.
"The Bowerman, which debuted in 2009 and is named after former University of Oregon coach Bill Bowerman, is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female NCAA track & field athletes in the nation."
According to this schedule there’s only 25 minutes between the 400 meters and the 400 meters hurdles. I wonder if she will actually try it. If she does and she pulls it off, that will be more mind blowing.

It won't be easy but in her favor she is 2 seconds faster in the 400h than anyone else so far....but fatigue on the 10th hurdle could be problematic. I also think this is a very tough double.
