Sportsmanship at it’s worst? I see journalism and humanity at it’s worst here.
He was misquoted, and then that misquote was taken out of context.
RoJo, your clickbait, trolling “journalism” is shameful and embarrassing. Have you talked to him? Do you know him? Do you know the real story? He has been harassed by hundreds of people, and you’re a big reason why.
2 miles before the mishap, he was 45 seconds down. That gap had whittled to 25 seconds when the wrong turn occurred. There is a strong likelihood that he would have won anyway, but that’s beside the point.
He’s guilty of being in 3rd place at the wrong time. You’re guilty of so, so much more.
I coached Tyler throughout his collegiate career, and know him better than most. You’re characterization based on flawed information, flawed logic and flawed morality is the real story here.

I don’t know. That’s why I asked.

If you've been posting on this thread, I'd recommend listening to this podcast interview with the winner. The guy doing the interview admits he's a friend of the winner, so it's not exactly unbiased. But important to remember that we're talking about a human being here who is well aware of the discussion surrounding this race.
I doubt any opinion I share will change anyone's minds, but a few things worth noting.
-His quote in the QC Times wasn't great. "I was about 20 seconds back so I kind of saw it happening, I'm not going to shout. It's not my job." He's right that it's not his job. And you can question whether someone who was 20 secs behind would have been able to have made themselves heard. But the quote makes it sound as if he chose not to shout because it wasn't his job to shout, not because he couldn't be heard (on the podcast, he says shouting would have been useless as he was too far back). Because of that, and the way Rojo relayed the story, I said on the LRC podcast (recorded Wednesday morning) that this was an example of poor sportsmanship.
-That said, it's important to note that the winner says in the podcast that he did tell someone. He said there was a lead biker with the two leaders and then another biker riding next to him. He says he told the biker next to him that the guys ahead were making a wrong turn. At that point, I think it's the biker's responsibility to book it and catch up to the leaders and get them to correct their error. The winner let a race official (who was actually in position to do something about it) know about it. So to endlessly bash the guy for not saying anything...at this point, I think it's unwarranted.
-If you're next to someone or 5 seconds behind, I think the situation is clear: if someone runs off course, it's poor sportsmanship not to yell out to them. The complicating factor here is that he was close enough to maybe be heard but not far enough away that you could definitively say they wouldn't have heard him.
TLDR - "rojo and I created a controversy out of nothing"

Could not agree more here coach . I coached Tyler in high school and the character assassination is very disappointing. As much as I love this site, this thread has brought out the worst in the supposed leaders of the site. Jonathan Gault has stepped up and reversed course after listening to Tyler’s podcast that he shared. Rojo has doubled down after listening to the same podcast. If Rojo would reach out to Tyler he would meet one of the most genuine people I have ever known.
Clickbait at its finest from a website I used to respect
It wouldn’t let me post my real name, but it is Trae Cotner and I coached Tyler in HS. Feel free to contact me anytime. Jonathan has my Twitter information.

So glad someone sees this for what it is. Well said.
This has really outraged me to see Rojo do this to this guy. And he doesn’t have the decency to admit he was wrong. Really disgusting.
Hmmm. I'm sure others have pointed out that a 20 second lead equates to almost 300 feet of separation at a 6 min per mile pace. There wasn't anything the "poor sport" could have done to get the leaders back on course.

I'll butt in here.
You know what?
I want athletes with a fighting, competitive spirit who don't cheat to win.
Nothing irreconcilable about that.
Like Jenny Simpson. Can you even imagine her doing a chelimo cheater-drift?

He should have said, “I definitely feel bad for them. I was about 20 seconds back and there wasn’t much I could do as by the time I got to the turn they were gone.”
Who even knows how accurate the quote is. The press is notoriously bad at being factual.
Rojo’s new attempt to be all woke and judgmental is really getting annoying. Especially since he’s so inconsistent and hypocritical.
Give the guy a break. 20 seconds back is too far combined with the mental and physical exertion the guy is putting out.
Stuff it Rojo you poser.
+100
To hell with rojo.

I think Rojo has to step down from Letsrun.

You thought of a middle aged man when I told you to think of something more pleasant?
Well Rojo considering you lean to the right politically and the recent Republican President would cheat at all costs and then you were a Rush Limbaugh fan and Limbaugh supported Trump…I am not sure you should be calling out poor sportsmanship or cheating.

Yeah, says the liberal loser who supported a phony president who clearly cheated in an election. You believe anything negative about Trump but you support liberals tearing down cities and cheating in an election. You're so much brighter than Rojo...not!

You are intellectually incapable and dishonest. I am significantly smarter than you. All you did was post lies.

I love how people think I created this controversy. I found out about it from the Washington Post for Christ's sake. It was on NPR.
We have changed the title of the thread to make it more accurate. Here is why.
Update on 1/20 at 11:13 pm ET: The event happened between 13 and 14 miles. While the race winners said he was about 20 seconds ahead, the race director has pointed out that was 35 seconds behind at the halfway split which is a little more than 180 meters.
Also, the race winner has appeared on a podcast where he said he did say something to the volunteer biker next to him. As a result, I have changed the title of the thread as he did say something so it's not the worse act of sportsmanship. It was initially entitled, "Sportsmanship at its worst: Runner knew marathon leaders were running off course, doesn't say anything & celebrates marathon win."
Him celebrating his great run - to run a 2:15 pb solo is pretty amazing. He should be proud, particularly while coaching.
However, the quote still bothers me. No, it's not his job to do it but there are lots of things that we as a society do to help the world be a better place that we aren't required to do.
I'd love to know the conversation between him and the volunteer on the bike.

Wait, what? He was misquoted but never mentioned that fact in a 25 minute podcast?

That's easy for you to preach, Rojo, sitting on your generously large behind while this guy is trying to run a marathon at PB pace. Do you even remember what running is like?
