Greetings!
Typing on board the plane flying back home after my first race this season. Like a year ago, it was 10k on the Sochi Formula-1 car racing circuit. Was pretty much concerned regarding my capability because it was just the 10th time I was running this year after a long period of winter cross-training at HR not higher than sub-LT level (xc skiing and arc and elliptical trainers at a gym). Also, a tempo a week ago was rather discouraging: could only maintain a 4:13/km pace (6:48/mile) for 7k, though in regular trainer shoes and thick clothes (it was cold).
Thus, decided to start very conservatively with a slight hope deep inside that "race magic" (read, adrenaline control) and race shoes would help me float near 4:00/km (6:27/mile). And it worked. First 3k passed at 12:00 and was planning to maintain this pace further on. Surprisingly, noticed 19:54 at 5k and then was moving under 3:55/km (6:19/mile) the whole second half finishing at 39:15. For some minutes was suspecting that my Garmin watch was lying but it matched per km marks OK and also rang 10k some 10-15 m only before the finish gate. Won my age group (65+) but was faster than winners in 60-64 and 55-59 categories as well. 134 of 1591 overall.
Happy and injury-free running to all!
Nice running to not only finish ahead of those a little younger than you, but better yet the majority of runners overall. It's great to make those youngsters respect their elders. Also nice to see you did it on mostly cross-training. I have been mostly cross-training myself because I had a minor injury that wasn't bad, but I thought I should let it heal. Running made it a little more sore but cross-training didn't and it seems OK now, did so I did the right thing. But I only ran 46 miles last month, and I was signed up for a marathon very soon. So I dropped down to the half marathon. I think that was the right thing to do also. Good running everyone.
